(See what we did there? Like the love child of ‘Got milk’ and ‘You’ve been tangoed’)
Laura Reynolds looks at the hype surrounding the collaboration.
Just a week to go until the man in red arrives...
Walk down any high street at the moment, and what do you notice? Yes, Christmas collections are beginning to filter into the shop windows, enticing us in with promises of kisses under the mistletoe if we can just find the perfect dress. You might be thinking that it’s a bit early to be writing about Christmas dresses, and you’d be right. What excites me about all these Christmas clothes is velvet. Walk into any shop right now and you’ll find any amount of velvet adorning the rails in various forms: dresses, skirts, shorts, even hats.
The beautiful thing about velvet is that you can work it into an outfit in so many different ways. This black velvet skirt from Topshop works brilliantly with this season’s glam goth look if you pair it with a cream blouse and silver accessories, but would go equally well with a cropped knitted sweater and brogues for a more casual winter look. Velvet shorts add a bit of excitement if you usually wear denim cutoffs over your tights, or opt for tighter high-waisted ones for going out; style them as ASOS have, or tuck in a sheer shirt to make them a little more feminine. And always with heels! Or go all out and buy a velvet jacket. Just make sure to go for “mysterious” rather than “magician”…
Dresses, however, are where this trend opens out. There’s something to suit everyone’s tastes, whatever fit you want to wear. Channel your inner five-year-old and go back to the days you’d wear a velvet dress with a lace collar to a birthday party; accessorise with fierce heels to steer clear of “lost little girl”. H&M are doing a great bodycon number which fully unzips down the front; buy it in black, or go for floral. Of course, Topshop are right on top of this at the moment. They have studded velvet, crushed velvet, cut-out velvet. It depends what you want: velvet goes really well with this winter’s Heritage (read crazy-lady-playing-dressing-up!) trend, so find yourself a velvet top and layer it over at least two skirts. On the other hand there are some lovely velvet prom dresses in Topshop which flatter everyone.
If you’re not too keen on going all-out velvet, look closely at the clothes hanging in shops: many of them work the trend with velvet trims. You’ll find velvet lapels, velvet pockets, velvet collars. Get a dress with a velvet bodice (check out H&M again), or buy a velvet headband. If all that fails, head to Poundland. They do a great line in velvet Santa hats.
