With Thanksgiving just gone, and Christmas only a few weeks away, I thought I’d tackle what to wear when a big (read HUGE) meal is on the cards. You may be one of those lucky people who is able to abstain from devouring everything in sight on Christmas day, but if, like me, an hour after the meal sees you curled into the corner of the sofa unable to move due to the vast quantities of food you’ve just consumed, this might be right up your street.

It all depends, of course, on the occasion, and whether you need to look smart or not. For some, these big family meals are a relaxed affair, making stuffing your face AND looking good relatively easy. Luckily for you, the A/W 11 catwalks were awash with chunky knitwear, perfect for crisp winter days, and even more so for covering up the inevitable food-baby-bulge after Christmas day’s overindulgences. Stella McCartney showed oversized jumpers and cardigans worthy of any festive gathering, and who could resist these offerings from Sonia Rykiel and Marc by Marc Jacobs?

Unfortunately for most of us, our loans by the end of term wouldn’t be able to dream of stretching to such luxuries, but the high street has inevitably pounced on the trend. In the cold weather, knitwear sells, so most shops have a smorgasbord of choice. Throw either of these offerings from River Island or French Connection over some leggings (yoga leggings, with their wide waistband, are a popular choice) and a long tank, or combine length with slouchiness in a sweater dress like this one from French Connection. If it’s an evening affair you’re attending, go for this sequinned Topshop jumper to add some drama to your outfit. As well as jumpers, there are loads of cardigans around right now; wear with leggings and a long baggy (too tight and you may end up looking three months pregnant…) jersey top underneath. Again a chunky knit will keep you warm, and provide structure to hide your stomach if you’ve eaten too much, but I lovethis one from River Island for the collar, which harks back to old-school aviator jackets. Should you need to smarten up a bit, go for a pair of towering heels and big jewellery. It always works.

I, on the other hand, have Christmas lunch with my grandparents, who thought I had to wear a suit to uni. This calls for a slightly more formal approach, and it’s often hard to find an outfit which ticks this box whilst also being comfortable and able to conceal how much food you may have just eaten. The easiest thing to wear is a dress, and perhaps a chunky cardigan to cover up. Chose a high waisted fit with plenty of ruched material; Zara and New Look do these well. If you can get away with something looser, this dress from Zara can be worn again and again, dressed up or down. New Look is selling a design with an on-trend Peter Pan collar, or look to Topshop again for something thing a little more glitzy.

Of course, if none of the suggestions here take your fancy, just go shopping (does anyone need an excuse?!). The shops are full to bursting with knitted goods. As for me, I’m just going to take ONE spoonful of each food this year at Christmas, and hope that I feel a little less like a beached whale than I did last year.
