The trouble with being a fresher

University of York
Monday, 24th August 2009
This year’s set of Freshers will enter a University of York that is considerably different from when we were “young” and “naive”. The culprit? Heslington East. With the capacity to accommodate more students than ever before, the university will avoid last year’s complaints of shared rooms and alternative off-campus accommodation, but at what cost to the college identity?

Perhaps the hardest hit college will be Goodricke which will no longer be the one with awful accommodation but great college spirit. They face the challenge of redefining their reputation for popularity despite the fact that Goodricke has now replaced Halifax as the definition of far far away.

James will also have to rethink its definition as the college with the really nice accommodation as it acquires Cell Block C which even behind the thickest beer goggles could not be considered nice. Also acquiring McQ’s, the JCR and the SCR, perhaps James will become the hub of activity, that is if Cell Block and Rah Block can get along.

Vanbrugh will grow even larger with the addition of Goodricke A and B block. The college seems to be seeping across York, first with Fairfax House and new Vanbrugh to the West, now with old Goodricke south across the lake.

Wentworth will help poor graduates save some pennies by giving them cheaper rooms in D block and thus dominating the south west of campus.

It seems choosing a college will be much less clear-cut for this year’s a-level well doers. The name of their college won’t be enough to define them, the block will now give a clearer picture. With such large colleges it will be harder to make them feel at home and quaint events aimed at nurturing college spirit will be logistically difficult to organise.

The JCRCs have already had difficulties finding venues large enough to hold all their Freshers for events in Fresher’s Week. They have also had to anticipate how the rearrangement of the colleges will affect them in order to advertise their colleges to the new Freshers. For with the reduction of accommodation packs and paper work, this year first years will chose their colleges online, rather like booking a hotel. There are fears that this with result in an auction style room sale with students choosing colleges because everyone else has rather than based on their own research. There are also concerns that colleges will be swamped by students studying the in- college degree. Vanbrugh would thus be full of historians, James full of psychologists (not something to wish on anyone!)

With A-level results published last week, not only will Freshers have to rush to sort out all their accommodation, they will also have to deal with an onslaught of reports about the high numbers of A’s awarded and the lowering standards of British education. Hardly conducive to celebrating the successful end to an era.
