Top Tips for Eco-Friendly Freshers

recycle
Sunday, 19th October 2008
So you're a bright-eyed fresher eager to get stuck into university life: having a laugh, meeting new people and of course, excessive drinking and partying. I'm guessing embarking on a more environmentally friendly lifestyle isn't high on your list of priorities, however being an eco-friendly fresher may be easier than you think...

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

You've heard it all before and many local councils now have a recycling scheme in place. Anything from tin cans and glass to paper and plastic can be recycled and re-used and this saves energy, and prevents rubbish from ending up in landfill sites where they don't decompose. There are usually different containers around campus accomodation that you can put these materials into, as separating them makes them easier to recycle.

Make sure you re-use plastic bags from supermarkets rather than using unecessary amounts - this will often save you money as most supermarkets now charge for them!

Online study resources

In this day and age almost anything is accessible on the internet. Where possible, make use of online books and study materials and read the newspaper online. This will save you money and will not generate excess waste. Of course, if you need to print stuff off you can always recycle the paper afterwards!

Cycle instead of taking the bus

I'm sure many of us (including myself) rely quite heavily on buses as a means of local transport, even if it's to take us the shortest distances. However, as a newly converted bike rider I've discovered that cycling has its perks. It's a lot cheaper than taking the bus into town all the time and it keeps you fit and healthy. Bike riding in York is a safe and easy mode of transport with good cycle routes to most parts of town.

Energy saving

This includes all the usual things, such as switching computers off as opposed to leaving them on standby and switching lights off when you leave a room. Also, try cooking in a group or with friends in halls, as this will use up less electricity as ovens and hobs won't have to be constantly switched on and off. It's also a chance to get to know housemates better and a good laugh! Similiarly, when boiling the kettle for a cuppa, only boil as much as you need to. Invest in some snug jumpers for the winter and wear a jumper on those cold evenings instead of turning the heating up.

Saving with water

Opt for a shower instead of an indulgent bath every now and again as it uses up less water. Also, try not to keep the water running while brushing your teeth, and use a washing up bowl in the kitchen sink to minimise water waste while washing up.

See, it's not so hard being eco-friendly being a student and these basic tips are inexpensive and easy to put into practice. So start your first year in a new place the green way!

Showering uses less water than filling a bath, so long as you don't spend more than about 5 minutes in the shower - which is hard to do on a cold winter's morning!

Of course, if you're living in a student house, the chances are your bath won't have been cleaned for 5 years, so the prospects of using it are not so great anyway.
