Feeling down at uni?

Stressed girl
Uni can be stressful

Written by Liz Fletcher

We are all familiar with the cliché of the typical student lifestyle: late nights, long lie-ins and a diet of baked beans and cheap alcohol. However, how accurate is this perception of a carefree student life?

If we strip away the student stereotype, university life can contain a significant amount of pressure. This can range from the pressure to ‘fit in’ with the people around you to the pressure of academic study or accumulating student debt. Whether we are a fresher or a final year student, there are times when university life just seems, well, difficult. But with a student body of 13,000 students, does anyone care, or even notice, if you are not experiencing life at the University of York in a way which makes you happy?

For many of us,university is an independent experience: we are away from our families and home towns and have the luxury of complete freedom (with the exception of a compulsory lecture or two) to live life in the way that we wish. However, if a student experiences anxiety, depression, stress or any other mental health issue whilst at university, who is there to offer help?

Your University supervisor

Your supervisor can help with both personal or academic problems during your time at University. By making your supervisor aware of your situation, they can assist you in getting that help that you need so that you can enjoy your time at University and get the most out of your academic studies.

YUSU Academic Affairs and Welfare Services/Your college’s welfare team

Welfare is available to help with a variety of issues ranging from sexual health to just general wellbeing. Your college will have its own welfare team but you can also get in touch with YUSU if you experience difficulty in your University life.

Nightline

Nightline is a confidential service, open from 8pm to 8am every night and can be accessed by phone, email or by visiting their flat in Langwith G Block on campus. They offer complete confidentiality and are there to listen and offer information, rather than advice. They can also provide free sexual health supplies including condoms, pregnancy tests and Chlamydia testing kits.

Open Door Team

The Open Door Team can be found in the Careers Building (open from 10am to 4pm on Monday to Friday) and offers support for students experiencing emotional, psychological or mental health difficulties with professionally trained staff to help meet your needs.

Whilst for the majority of students, there will inevitably be the stereotypical student times where you appreciate the joys of a Ziggy’s hangover or skip a lecture to stay in bed; it is worth remembering that these services are available if you require them. They can offer their help and support so that any difficulties you may experience as a student can be overcome, leaving you free to experience your life as a student exactly as you wish. And finally, whilst your first priority must always be your own health and well-being, do not be afraid to encourage someone else to get support if you are concerned.
