Three key spring trends

asos
Skirt, Asos, £28
Tuesday, 11th March 2008
Woohoo! It’s finally spring and my main source of excitement stems from the fact that it is well and truly time to break out of the drab gray/navy/brown cycle we all seem to get into over winter and step into some more interesting colours... as well as obvious joy at being able to leave the house in something other than a trench coat and wellies.

Written by Kimberley Bannister

The spring fashion shows all provided a crazy number of colour themes to choose from, with designers clearly not agreeing amongst themselves about the absolute must have colour trend. Delving into this fashion madness I’ve picked the three trends of the moment that most appeal to me: Monochrome, Floral and Red.

Monochrome

Yes, it’s been around for a while now and yes, and we all know it’s not the most exciting, stand out, in your face combination, but I was absolutely loving the designs coming out of London’s Fashion week, the classic monochrome has been updated by big blocky patterns and more relaxed tailoring. For me the best part of black and white staying around for spring is that it’s already so integrated into the high-street which means with the mid season sales starting it’ll be easy to pick up an ‘on trend’ bargain!

Another great thing about this look is that anyone can wear it as it’s difficult to get wrong. It can also be teamed with other styles such as waist belts and sheer blouses. As anyone who went to Fusion can tell you, Coast have a really good monochrome collection in at the moment, although I might be waiting until the student loan comes in before I get my hands on their dresses!

My favourite monochrome look is the sheer blouse/ pencil skirt combo, like the asos skirt above.

Floral Prints

Probably the most popular trend for this spring, florals seem to be everywhere at the moment. All the fashion shows were keen on the ‘romantic’ trend this season and the high street has certainly jumped on this bandwagon, every shop I go into at the moment seems to be stocked full of floaty floral knee length dresses with puff sleeves and cute little bow details. When going for the floral look it’s a good idea to keep accessories the same colour and keep them to a minimum, otherwise you run the risk of looking less fashionista and more bag lady.

The return of the maxi dress (Hurrah!) is perfect for medium to large floral prints, to get the chilled floral look just right team with loose, mussy hair and pumps. This little dress from oasis (£65) is perfect for spring and would look amazing with some black peep toe heels.

Red

For some reason a lot of people are scared of wearing red, but this should all change! Red is going to be big for spring and despite what you might think anyone can make red work for them, the key is to experiment with different shades. It might be a good idea to do this in the changing room though, rather than potentially wasting money! For the brave, red dresses and blazers are a definite must, although would probably be too much together!

If the mere thought of wearing red sends a shiver down your spine, you might be best off sticking to accessories, red heels look fantastic with dark skinny jeans, and a red waist belt would be bang on trend.

These patent court shoes from topshop are gorgeous and very reasonable!

So, there we have it. A very brief rundown of the best colours for spring... now I’m just going to hide under my duvet and wait for the sun!
