Put fashion first without busting your budget!!

YSL Sandal
The YSL Metallic Stiletto

The city smog of home bears little resemblance to the fresh air of York; so I was sure to take this into account while packing my bags to return, and packed provisions to wrap-up warm in the winter months.

Being on a tight budget doesn't mean sacrificing style, and I’m going to try to incorporate the season’s fashions into my existing wardrobe without dipping into my food money.

The Autumn/Winter 2008 catwalks unveiled exciting ensembles from designers hailing from New York, to our very own London. Trends included pretty punk pieces, more reserved items in tweeds and plaid, and also smart and sophisticated clean cut garments that speak for themselves. To get you started while you work out your budgets, I’ve got a little checklist of the staple pieces of clothing and must-have accessories of the season.

The ‘goes with everything’ item

Knitwear is ‘in’ in almost any shape or size, but that doesn’t make it a staple. Knitwear in grey is a staple. Mustard yellow and other musky, muted colours can work well but they’ll never beat a heavy grey knit with a discrete bit of detail to finish off an outfit. "‘Day’ by Birger et Mikkelsen" advertises a lovely looking long grey knit in a dreamy wilderness of snow and undoubtedly beautiful clothing.

The ‘I need them’ shoes

Listen up ladies who worship the heel - fashion, this season sees the heel at it’s most fierce. The days may be getting shorter and darker, but it is well worth the concentration of navigating through cobbles on a night out to strut out and about in a pair of stilettos. I’ve spotted a fantastic pair of shoes by Louis Vuitton that might redefine super-sized heels altogether. These stilettos look more like boots yet they are mounted on wedge platforms. Are they boots, stilettos, are they wedges- I don’t know- I can’t tell, but I can argue that I need them because they’re bound to support me better after a few drinks. Don’t worry, flats with over the top detail are also in, but that means huge bows and piles of sparkly sequins or full-on patent shine.

Bags are always a great investment to…carry books back from the library?

Some of us don’t need an excuse to buy a nice new bag but if you do, make it work. Luella’s cute over-the-shoulder bags are an easy day-to-day option. Dolce & Gabbana presented bags of all sizes where as other designers chose to stick to extremes-either the oversized day bag or clutch bag with evening outfits. Wherever you’ll be shimmying with it, be sure it's one with bags of character that reflects your personality!

Belts for curves, hats for hat hair and scarves for…hat hair too?

Only joking-to have hat hair and take your hat off in public would surely be a crime, but fear not, I’m not asking you to do that. As well as flowing, lengthy scarves, silky neck and headscarves were also nodding about all over the catwalk; -even Agyness Deyn was sporting one! As for your waistbelts, hold on to them! Yves Saint Laurent used waistbelts with bowl haircuts, then Richard Nicoll sent models out with bowler hats, so keep what’s on your head cool and quirky. Perhaps a trip or two to vintage shops or a particularly lucky find in a charity shop is the way to go?

Hair and makeup with out the ‘hoo-ha’

These needn’t be trying this season as you’ve got the choice between big and big and fluffy or smooth and sleek depending on your look: casual and edgy or a minimalist look. The big word in makeup this season is eyeliner, preferably black. The punk attire with a gothic undertone cries out for heavy eye makeup, though straight cut, simple styles needn't be overshadowed. Try experimenting with more smearing under the eye, less or different flicks, up, down or straight out and find what you prefer.

Jewellery with a capital ‘J’

Think big, loud, statement jewellery with colour and angular shapes that demand attention. Cuffs and bracelets with huge glass flowers and blocks of precious stones can be great for all fuss ensembles, but remember that with some sleek suits and heavily patterned plaid pieces speak for themselves.

With this little shopping list in your back pocket you should be well on the road to town with some fashion buys that are sure to score some fashion points.

And some things to look out for, for the men...

  • Knitwear and especially big knits
  • Peacoats or short-cut trench coats
  • Plaid and check patterns. Those 90s, grungey, lumberjack shirts are on the rebound
