I try to avoid the centre of York during the day. It's not that I have anything against the general public or that I fear open spaces. I don't have a problem once night falls, but during daylight hours I just don't trust myself.

The fact of the matter is there’s absolutely no way I could venture into town and leave without purchasing at least a new lip-gloss.

So it was with more than a little apprehension that I set off for Kings Manor. (For anyone who has never needed to journey as far as the University’s city centre premises it may be worthwhile bearing in mind that, between there and campus, an entire high street of shops lie in wait.) I knew it would be risky but I truly believed that if I set off before the shops opened, grabbed my book and headed straight back home, no harm could be done. I came away with a new pair of shoes and a bag.

What’s the matter with me? Has it really reached the stage where I’m going to have to start leaving my purse at home? Well actually, yes. And it turns out that I’m not alone.

According to a recent survey 1 in 20 of us just can’t control our urge to shop and a massive 80 per cent confess to regularly over spending. In the UK alone more than a million people consider themselves to be suffering from a compulsive shopping disorder, yet our materialistic society continues to excuse and encourage.

The sheer number of never-worn clothes (labels still attached) and the truly comic sight of my wardrobe literally bulging at the seams as it tries, but fails, to contain them all is a source of constant wonder in my house.

Well no more. I’m taking control. As of November 1st I am fasting. For an entire month I will only buy things that I actually need and don’t just want. I will not purchase any new clothes and I most definitely will not procure any additional accessories. I feel it necessary to point out how difficult this will be as I happen to work in a shop which insists upon bestowing a truly excessive amount of discount upon my reluctant shoulders. I should also like to emphasise that when I mentioned this plan to friends and family I was greeted by either utter silence or hysterical laughter, very supportive!

But I am resolved. I will prevail and I will share my sufferings, which will of course end in joy.

p.s As I am not officially starting this ‘fast’ until November 1st I was of the opinion that I would not be breaking any rules by investing in a practically perfect Oasis coat. Apparently not …
