Red carpet fashion - Golden Globes 2011

Last night marked the Golden Globe awards, and Ricky Gervais caused controversy with his jokes...but who were the fashion winners and losers? (Click on the actresses' names to see pictures!)

Emerald gems

The hue of the night turned out to be a deep emerald green, with Mila Kunis particularly acing the look with a neat one-shoulder taffeta-esque gown. The ever gorgeous Angelina Jolie went a little bolder with a sparkling mint number, which drawn in at the waist perfectly framed her.

Mad Men nominee Elisabeth Moss deserves an honourable mention, but the dangerous amount of pleats folded up over her breasts knocked her down a couple of grades.

Nude with a Twist

Another red carpet trend? The usually dull-as-drywall beige frock was brought out several times with a little something extra here and there to make it stand out – albeit to varying degrees of success. The unadventurous were The Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco and Glee’s Dianna Agron who almost faded into the background with their quietly appropriate gowns (although the latter busted out some gorgeous hair and jewellery to make up for it).

Taking some risks were last year’s winner Sandra Bullock, who looked like she was covered in lines of glitter glue, and Michelle Williams; though she may have thought the daisies would be light and playful, they just put me in mind of granny’s tablecloth and aged her way beyond her years. Perhaps the usually revealing Christina Aguilera had the right idea with the lace black overlay on her mermaid dress – classy yet sexy.

Sparkling Stunners and Suckers

Shimmer and sparkle are great ways to add a little red carpet glamour to an otherwise average dress. While too much can enter disco diva territory (sorry Amber Riley and Anne Hathaway!), done just right can lead to sensational results (see Olivia Wilde below). Slightly less successful was Jennifer Lopez, whose sheer poncho lined with gems tackied up her otherwise elegant strappy white dress.

Head-scratching conundrums

Some of the red carpet crazy was too predictable to evoke a strong reaction –Helena Bonham-Carter’s artistic floral get-up complete with a loose black tutu and mismatched shoes was just the right level of eccentric to be excused, and Tilda Swinton’s catering-staff-chic wasn’t much of a shocker either. But usual red carpet icons seemed to be making bizarre creative choices – January Jones’ unnecessary display of flesh, the bizarre giant red rose ruining an otherwise beautiful dress on Natalie Portman (why couldn’t it have been smaller and pink?!) and Scarlett Johansson’s matronly wheat-coloured sparkler with butterfly sleeves all made me scratch my head and think…huh?

My 5 Best Looks:

5. Catherine Zeta-Jones, Monique Lhullier – the winning shade, eye-catching material and perfect shaping made the Welsh actress look a winner.

4. Megan Fox, Armani Privé – the criss cross of pale pink satin ribbons with sparkling belts on the bodice made one of the sexiest women in the world look intriguing and graceful.

3. Sofia Vergara, Vera Wang –flaunted her curvaceous figure in a daring red number with a black ribbon belt adding a little edge that just made her ooze star power.

2. Julie Bowen, Tadashi Shoji – though initially conflicted, I couldn’t help but be won over by the clay-coloured creation with delicately sewn chiffon ruffles that moved along with her perfectly.

1. Olivia Wilde, Marchesa – the House actress made eyes pop with her strapless princess ballgown and killer spiky golden Louboutins – the most memorable look of the night!

…and 5 Worst:

5. January Jones, Versace – the mildly obscene cleavage and the rectangles of torso on show just came off as too desperate for attention. The excessively long fringe didn’t help either.

4. Tilda Swinton, Jil Sander – yes, she always does it, but if she could for once at least try…?

3. Julianne Moore, Lanvin – the puffy left sleeve is bad enough, but being covered in creases just made her look even more of a hot mess.

2. Halle Berry, Nina Ricci – as an avid hater of the mullet dress, I was always going to hate this, but the cheap-looking bodice was too reminiscent of hooker lingerie.

1. Heidi Klum, Marc Jacobs – you would think the Project Runway judge would know better, but the hideous colour clash of red and brown hung on her like a shapeless sack
