Red carpet fashion: Grammys 2011

Grammys
Interesting choices for some stars...
Tuesday, 15th February 2011
On Sunday night, all the stars of music and beyond came out in LA to their biggest awards show of the year – the Grammys. And of course, musicians are artists – so when it comes to red carpet, they like to break a few rules and make it colourful. Here are some of the highs and lows!

Black Bombshells

Black was a huge trend on the carpet, with several nominees snapped with the look. No less than three Glee girls went for it, but hands-down winner was Dianna Agron for being a little bolder than her usual demure self – coiffed like a rockstar with edgy jewellery and daring eye make-up, the image perfectly matched her Vivienne Westwood sculpture of a dress. Jenna Ushkowitz on the other hand looked somewhat like a shabbily wrapped present, while Lea Michele went a little samey on her past red carpets with a scooped neck (which she’ll hopefully eventually realise doesn’t flatter her) and a handful of ruffles down her skirt.

Anther noteworthy red carpet raven was Janelle Monae who went quirkier wearing a pantsuit – and though I loved the black sparkling blazer, it bothered me how the trousers gave off a satin shine too; she should’ve opted for a non-reflective material which would have made her top half even more of a statement.

Sparkling Shame

The ever popular sparkling dress was in full force, particularly in the gold-bronze shade. However, very few of the pure glitter-gowns hit home – Jennifer Lopez’s glassy ultra-mini was a few inches too short (particularly to push up that much cleavage), Kathy Griffin’s ribbon-patterned gold and yellow was an eyesore and Kim Kardashian looked more like a Vegas escort than someone worthy of being snapped by the paparazzi. Even Miley Cyrus got in on the action with a gold, silver and black animal print dress, but her dishevelled hair came close to swallowing her up completely – at least she worked some very complementary jewellery. Honourable mention should go to country songstress Miranda Lambert, who at least had an almost sci-fi inspired shoulder piece, but unfortunately it became too frumpy and ill-fitting further down.

For all those mild-misfires, there was one success – Heidi Klum managed to recover following her horrific Golden Globes mess with a perfectly fitting off-the-shoulder sleek golden Julien Macdonald number that flattered her in all the right places.

The Wild West Coast

There were plenty of bizarre fashion choices that almost seem ungradeable (maybe that was what they were going for!). You’ve probably heard about Lady Gaga’s egg/pod entrance by now, which left me disappointed at missing out on a potential Haus of Gaga creation, but there was plenty more to talk about. Ciara had an oddly mismatched Grecian-style band across her chest with a super-floaty skirt that was both a tad too revealing and drawing attention to assets which, well, aren’t exactly worth flaunting that much. We had Nicki Minaj’s decision to, quite literally, go head-to-toe in leopard print (a pattern I generally loathe anyway); Katy Perry’s feather-wings on the back of a shiny mosaic bikini and haphazardly-wrapped pearl sarong and, lest I forget, Rihanna – the woman who has every designer at her feet – choose a Jean Paul Gaultier mermaid dress that was just layer-upon-layer of white ruffles. Not only did she look like a pageant float, but it was just plain dull and repetitive.

The Best Dressed

Jennifer Hudson, Versace – though I usually punish harshly for anything resembling a mullet dress, the wispy material made it acceptable, and the grid-like bodice pushed it into winning territory.

Natasha Bedingfield, unknown designer - Though I took some time to warm up to it, the lavender bustier and watercolour-inspired skirt were a refreshing summery highlight to the carpet (though the hair was all wrong).

Selena Gomez, J. Mendel - this luminescent white delight was both simple and intriguing (sheer panels!)

Amber Riley, Ema Sevahl – the tiger-print strapless, intricately decorated with gold and silver paint down the centre, was a surprise gem.

Keri Hilson, Basil Soda – squeezing herself in, my personal best-dressed pick sported a light teal mini with gold detailing and a petal-shaped addition to her chest – playful yet stunning.
