Bags of joy

Bags
Why choose?
Tuesday, 6th September 2011
Admittedly, writing this article feels like writing a 90s teen magazine back-to-school feature. But if you think about it, that all important university handbag is a tricky choice. It has to be big enough to carry all those dissertation-weary books back to the library, small enough to lug around when you’re stuck on campus all day, and able to withstand spontaneous duck attacks and Yorkshire’s finest weather. In short, the right bag is a thing of awe and wonder, which is why the awesome and wonderful Yorker lifestyle team have put together this guide to the best handbags around (Men, fear not-see Thursday’s Modern Man for our pick of the best ‘man bags’ too).

Your inner geek can rejoice, backpacks are making a comeback-the more floral and eye-catching, the better. Although it’s on the small side, this backpack from ASOS is very reasonably priced at £25. Backpacks are definitely the way to go if you’re a cyclist, plus they’re better for your back than other types of bag, meaning you can now cite health reasons for buying a new bag. Win win.

For a classically elegant look, Dorothy Perkins have a large selection. This cream tote is my personal favourite. It would look good with almost any outfit, and although it may be a bit too formal for day to day campus trips, it’s a good size, and could probably be justified as an “investment piece”. This less pricey, although slightly smaller, alternative, also available at Dorothy Perkins, would look cute with a patent mac or a pair of brogues.

A more casual option is this duffle bag, which breaks away from the reds and browns that are taking over the High Street at the moment. It’s leather, so likely to last longer than other bags, although it may not smell so lovely if it gets wet.

Not the most waterproof of bags, but this sheepskin-look bag had a cosy winter feel to it, although stand still for too long, you may risk being sent back to the farm.

For anyone desperate to cling on to shattered illusions of warmer weather, Accessorize have several summery designs, such as this butterfly pattern scoop bag. It’s good for quick trips to campus or into town, but unlikely to withstand the weight of several of the library’s heftier offerings.

When you are ready to let go of the summer, this eye-catching bag leads nicely into autumn without becoming too wintery and dark .

A more simplistic option is this generic yet classic black leather bag from Next. Easy to match to any outfit, and good for dressing up or dressing down, black is always a safe option.

For people who prefer to go hands-free, messenger bags and satchels are also back again. For a classic look, this briefcase-style satchel from Topshop is perfect for fitting smaller laptops in , or for a more unusual colour, this River Island red messenger bag is ideal, especially for those who prefer to travel light.

Forget Mary Poppins’ umbrella stand, you can almost fit a whole walk-in-wardrobe in this sack bag from River Island. It’s great for people who like to chuck everything in ‘just in case’, or for stocking up on supplies and snacks for a long day at the library, although again, suede + rain=everyone else in your seminar wondering where the dead rat is.

If none of these tickle your fancy, Cath Kidston have a wide range of bags in sizes and styles to fit every floral worshipper, or for more simplistic and less overtly feminine alternatives, ASOS and Urban Outfitters are great. For timeless staples, try Next, and for leather (real or imitation), TK Maxx is usually full of choice, and often have unusual colours.
