YUSU Presidential candidates: Shanks and Taylor out, Ngwena and Bushby in?

YUSU Elections 2009
Friday, 27th February 2009
At 4pm today, nominations for this year's YUSU elections will close and YUSU will be releasing the list of candidates shortly afterward. It is widely rumoured that Tim Ngwena and Charles Bushby will be running for President, along with Tom Langrish.
  • Tim Ngwena

Ngwena is a third-year Management student from James College and the current Chair of Fusion. He has previously been on the committees for the university rugby team and the York Entrepreneurs.

Ngwena has a vast amount of experience in graphic design, having worked as a graphic designer for both YUSU and Fusion last year.

  • Charles Bushby

Bushby is also a third-year Management student, and a member of Alcuin College. He is a member of the Boat Club, and is currently their merchandise rep.

Bushby is also a DJ for The Courtyard, and has previously worked as a DJ for Tru when it was known as Toffs. Before attending York, he studied Business Administration and International Relations at the University of Southern California.

Dan Taylor and Rory Shanks, however, have both informed The Yorker that they will not be running for President.

Taylor, a third year History and Politics student and 'campus celebrity', said: "I honestly never considered running. I have no idea where the rumour came from."

Taylor will instead be joining the army, and is off to Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in September.

Shanks also announced he did not intend to run for President, though could not give further details. It is believed he will run for another position, most likely Student Activities Officer.

You seem to forget Tom Langrish, Ella-Grace Kirton, Matthew Pallas, Ben Humphrey, Lewis Bretts, George Papadofragakis, Rhianna Kinchin, Gemma Jonshon, Ed Durkin and Emilly Scott, all of whom have been widely rumoured to run among various YUSU circles..

From what I've heard....

Lewis Bretts is about to launch a very big campaign.

I can't wait to see what it entails.

Also, I do believe Have I Got News For York are having him on this week. It's official - YUSU Democracy and Services Officer is going to be VERY close!!!

I heard that about Mr Houlders too! My mum overheard a conversation whilst in the queue in Poundland. Apparently Sam was talking to his dad on the phone, saying that he thought he had a good chance of winning cos he's the best looking!! Modest, too.

Best of luck Sam.

To make this article fair, surely there should be a section on Tom Langrish - who might also be running for President?

It seems strange not to mention Langrish and the last paragraph is extremely dodgy since I can name another five definites off the top of my head. I don't know why they're getting more attention in this article.

Maybe we should wait patiently to see who is *actually* running, rather than speculating about who is.

On other news, I heard Amy Winehouse was making a big comeback and is going to run for Pres.

Is there really any point in another 'rumour' article less than 12 hours before nominations close and the actual list of candidates is released?

I think Tom Langrish has had plenty of free publicity recently; can't have hurt to be guest columnist in Vision only 2 pages after their who-su? article.

Sam Houlders is official. I work in Your:shop and I saw his Mum walking into Costcutter the other day on the phone to the man himself. "You best be running, boyo, or else don't come home expecting a place to stay" she said, while purchasing a BLT meal deal for £2.89.

He's campaigning on the slogan "I'm Head and Houlders above the rest", which is funny because he'll make a fab president and he is also a very tall chap, literally making him 'Head and Houlders' above any other candidates! Chuckle!

I guess that's Sam for you though, funny, family man that also happens to be very tall.

Good luck to Mr. Taylor. Going to Sandhurst and into the British military is a noble and brave cause, one that many of us wouldn't consider doing.

I do hope that the Yorker isn't going to do the same thing campus media seem to do every election, and ignore the fact that we're also electing the person who'll manage the budget and the YUSU staff, and oversee it's commercial arms; the person who'll be responsible for making sure that we're looked after and that our welfare is maintained;the person who'll represent us and make sure our degrees are worthwhile;the person who'll oversee charity, student action, and all societies;and the person who'll make sure we're able to play sport.

Yeah, the president is important, but the reality is that for most student, the other sabbs have more impact on thier daily lives.

It actually wasn't. I've been in a seminar from 9.15 till just now!!! But yes, I was never running.

Really hope Shanks does not run again (for whatever position). Although he has done a great job, I think it is a bit ecxesive for students to 'do a Burton' and stay on for two years after they finish. In these YUSU positions I believe it is very easy to loose touch with the average student - Can Rory remember being a fresher? I can't. Good luck to him either way.
