A look at York Carnival

Carnival
York Carnival yet another success
Monday, 14th June 2010
York's annual carnival, organised by University of York students, took place last Sunday. A great success, despite adverse weather conditions, The Yorker takes a look behind the scenes of the event.

Niall Parr interviews Carnival Manager Charlie Fikry about his experience running the event.

NP: How were you involved last year?

CF: I stewarded last year, it was a lovely day and everyone was really nice so I got more involved this year.

NP: What was your job this year?

CF: I had to do a risk assessment, lead stewards and run it on the day.

NP: What was the best bit of the carnival for you?

CF: The parade was definitely the best bit. It had been raining for an hour and we’d had to set up stewards along the route to make sure that none of the kids went Awol. We were convinced that no one would be there when we got to the Minster, but when we did arrive there were around 200 school kids. It was absolutely amazing; loads of the kids were in costumes as well as loads of societies. The parade was lead by the samba band that was really well organised and played loads of stuff. We also had another samba band from town as well which was awesome.

NP: What was the hardest bit of organising the carnival?

CF: Timetabling events. So many people wanted to get involved that it was difficult to get everyone in especially as these things have a tendency to run late. The rain helped in a way because people had to cancel and so we were on time, although it was disappointing that people had had to cancel. I was really overwhelmed at how many people got involved, and, despite the rain, we got lots of positive feedback.

NP: What does the carnival bring to York?

CF: It’s the only thing, or certainly the strongest thing that links the town and the university. No other organisation brings the two together in the same way. It was good working with the council as people there have been involved in it for years and are really protective of it. Liz Topi in particular, she’s our main contact and cares as much about the carnival as we do, she’s fantastic.

NP: Anything else you’d like to say?

CF: Well we’re already starting to organise for next year and if they want to get involved email me at manager@yorkcarnival.org
