News

  • Arthur Christmas has the UK in high festive spirits having grossed a huge £1.89 million since its release. Despite being in its fourth week at the cinema it has reached number 1 in the UK box office, toppling Twilight from its top spot and sitting high above the this week's newcomers.
  • After rumours of a possible script in the working, Tom Cruise has confirmed to MTV that he will be involved in a sequel to the 80s classic Top Gun. Having had talks with both Tony Scott and Jerry Brukheimer, Cruise voiced how they are all keen for the project to go ahead so long as they can keep the same tone and feel of the original.
  • One of Britain’s best acting talents could soon be portraying the wife of legendary film maker Alfred Hitchcock. Helen Mirren has been in talks with Fox Searchlight this week which could mean she will soon be playing Alma Reville opposite Anthony Hopkins in Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho
  • Rumours are rife that an American Psycho remake could soon be gracing our screens. It was reported that Lionsgate have hired Noble Jones to write a new script based on Bret Easton Ellis's book. If true it will be interesting to see just how they will decide to bring this controversial work back to life on the big screen, but is a remake of a film made in 2000 really necessary?

New Releases

  • Puss In Boots

The spin off which has been an unlikely hit with the critics reaches UK cinemas this week. Puss in Boots in some ways acts as a prequel to the Shrek series, seeing Puss, wonderfully voiced by Antonio Banderas, going back to his Spanish routes in order to steal magic beans from Jack & Jill and find the goose who laid the golden egg. Here’s hoping that the film will retain some of the original’s quirky style of telling fairy tales and is not just another forgettable sequel in the Shrek franchise.

  • New Year's Eve

Like Gary Marshall’s other romantic holiday comedy Valentine’s Day, New Year’s Eve boasts a vast star studded cast all wound together in a web of interlinking love stories in New York City on New Year’s Eve. Just from the trailer you can already predict it will follow the formula of any other romantic comedy, finishing with that happy Hollywood ending.

  • Another Earth

An Indie film offering released this week is Mike Cahill’s low budget drama movie Another Earth that made a big impact at the Sundance film festival. It follows the story of Rhoda, a promising student, and her relationship with John, a composer, following a catastrophic accident where their paths collide.

Films on TV

If you are looking to save some pennies and stay out of the cold this week why not settle down and check out some of the film offerings on TV? One option is to tune into Knowing with Nicolas Cage on Sunday on Film4 at 9pm. Then there’s a comedy offering on Monday in the form of the hilarious Hot Fuzz showing on ITV2 at 9pm. Or if you are in the festive spirit then on Sky Movies all week are the classic White Christmas and the animated version of A Christmas Carol starring Jim Carey.
