The Yorker investigates what goes on behind the scenes of the York Carnival.
For the final article in our advent series, The Yorker caught up with the company’s directors to see how they have found this year and what they are most excited about in the coming year.
Aimee Howarth, Editorial Director
Aimee spoke of her joy at being elected as a director and her love of being involved with the company: “Being elected as editorial director has capped a fantastic year for me, after being elected also as editor and PR Officer,” she revealed. “I can’t imagine not being involved with The Yorker, especially at such an exciting time when we have a new website, YUSU elections to plan for and Roses coming up soon too.”
Aimee added that she hopes to see The Yorker top of the bunch in terms of student media at the university in the coming year, with exciting improvement and plans in the pipeline for the coming months. She said: “I hope that we can really push The Yorker in the coming year to make it the biggest media on campus and really expand the site and coverage we offer for all our readers. We have some great new ideas for coverage, such as interactive content and much more which I won’t reveal just yet, but do keep coming back to the site to see what we have to offer!”
Jason Rose, Marketing and Advertising Director
“The future is extremely exciting to be a part of; big things are planned at the Yorker and we've all got fresh ideas and approaches,” Jason said, echoing Aimee’s excitement about the future of the company.
“I'm looking forward to working with the other directors, and we're already planning exciting developments for 2012 - and we even get to start the year with a new website. The future's bright, and I'm ecstatic about it,” he added.
Alan Belmore, Financial Director
An auditor by trade after working for Deloitte in his gap year, Alan admitted that “the things that bore most send me into fits of excitement”, making him perfect for the recent tedious process of reshaping the company. “Reviewing corporate structure, finance management and accounting policies has made getting involved with The Yorker an amazing decision,” Alan said. “Look out over the next year as The Yorker is set to go from strength to strength as we aim to provide you with all the content you want - all in one place.”
About his experience with the company so far, Alan said: “This is an exciting time to be at the University of York and involved with the enterprise community in York. Being part of The Yorker is one of the few opportunities you have at university to get involved with a real life company, which is not only fascinating, but an amazing experience. I hope you have a fantastic Christmas, and if you want to get involved in The Yorker in January - get in touch!”
Ross Whiting, Technical Director
“I initially came to run for this position because I saw that the current site appeared to be neglected and getting a bit old. Once I was able to take a good look at the situation, it occurred to me that the problem was in fact far worse than I had anticipated,” Ross said, explaining his motives for getting involved.
Along with deputy webmaster David Morris and with Alan Belmore assisting, Ross has built a new website from scratch. “David has been doing a truly brilliant job working out the infrastructure behind the site, which is a great deal of work, and Alan is working on a special project that we're keeping under wraps at the moment, but trust me when I say it's going to be awesome! I have been working out the overall design and layout aspect of the new site, and an array of other little things, like persuading Google that we don’t use Pacific Standard Time in York,” Ross revealed, highlighting just a few of the problems they have encountered in The Yorker’s development.
Ross added: “All in all, I think the tech team has worked very well this first term and I am looking forward to hearing feedback concerning the new site after it has been released. We plan to continue adding new and useful functionality to the new site post-release, so don't worry if the new site is not as shiny as it could be, since we're going to start polishing immediately!”
Stef Neylon, Chief Operational Director
Head honcho Stef said rounded off by saying reflecting on the previous term and what is in store for the company in the future. She said: "This term has seen a lot of changes in The Yorker. I strongly believe these will improve the running of The Yorker, meaning we can look forward to the coming term and opportunities we're creating."
MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM EVERYONE AT THE YORKER - HOPE IT'S A GOOD ONE! SEE YOU NEXT YEAR
