In the first of a series on world leaders, Miles Deverson takes a look at Nicholas Sarkozy
Attending the Goodricke College inauguration as one of the special guests selected to meet His Royal Highness Prince Andrew, Wade Weeks socialised comfortably with individuals such as the High Sheriff of North Yorkshire Richard Compton and the City of York Mayor John Galvin. Both friendly and understanding, she is well connected within York and very approachable. She welcomed an opportunity to express her views to students via The Yorker despite her busy schedule and was a pleasure to interview.
In stark contrast from the adjacent constituency York Outer, Labour is predicted to obtain the majority of the electoral vote in York Central. Current MP Hugh Bayley has been an MP since 1992 and is hoping to secure another term.
Wade Weeks, however, is a significant competitor to Bayley. She is currently leading a campaign entitled ‘New Forest’ which aims to plant 70,000 trees before next years’ St George’s Day. “Humans understand that trees are a good thing” she commented, adding that “people cannot approach this with their old prejudices.” This project stems from both a concern for the environment and a desire to leave a legacy: “if I’m not successful , I’ll have left something behind.”
Mother of three, Wade Weeks is acutely aware of the problems facing today’s youth. Her children, Honeysuckle, Perdita and Rollo are aged between 22 and 30, meaning that they are currently experiencing similar things to many students at the University of York. She highlighted the inordinate amount of red tape currently surrounding buying houses and creating businesses and expressed the Tory desire to “cut all the red tape and bureaucracy to make it easier for young people.”
Of the Labour leadership, she remarked that the current interest paid out by the government was equal to the education budget, and that “the government have bitten off far more than they can chew.” The Tory approach will focus on creating the right environment to stimulate the nation from the bottom upwards.

Will there be similar interviews with the other candidates? This would be positive to the point of biased if the others weren't to get equaivalent coverage.
