To bare a brave barnet or not to be so brave

Edward Hair
Edward Scissorhands
Tuesday, 10th June 2008
This weekend the sun was scorching hot (as far as this summer has been so far anyway), so it's no surprise that a lot of us are eager to pop down to the hairdresser's for a summery trim.

Of course, as well as clothes, shoes and accessories, hair can be a major fashion thing. I mean, most people do spend at least a little bit of time before going out on doing their hair. Rushing for 9:15 lectures (after putting your alarm on snooze for what feels like five minutes but is actually nearer an hour), doesn't always install in us the urge to ensure our hair's nice and neat, nice and not neat but in place, or however else we intended it be.

That's not to say that a student can't do alright with a decent do. Some of us, although I'm puzzled as to how, are morning people who make time to fix their hair. I am not. That said, opting for a curly and intentionally not-so-tame hair-do keeps my locks happy. Overnight they can puff up a little like they're from the head of one of The Horrors and in the morning all I need to do is throw in a bit of hair mousse. Voila! Passably tame hair is born! (although my friends might object to this claim) Nonetheless, I am happy with my day to day meant-to-be-curly but in reality slightly frizzy hair. Well, until it gets to the point when the Edward Scissorhands masterpiece that was cut into it has completely grown out.

Curley Hair

Before my university experience had begun I had only stepped into hair salons to meet up with friends still having their hair done. My aunt is a hairdresser so had always cut and styled my hair. Yes, great for my not-so-bulging student pocket of pennies, but not very practical while living about 200 miles from home. OK, so fixing what became what can only be described as a dull mop of hair was going to cost a little more than expected, but little did I know the wonders that the world of the hair salon brings. Yes, the head massage disguised as merely a wash was lovely. I'm sure you've felt that adrenaline rush when you sit down and the hairdresser starts combing through your hair and parting it this way and that. Relief comes next whilst they are snipping away to shape a style that bares little resemblance to those haircuts children draw (like a giant rainbow with a horrible straight cut clump at the bottom).

Red Hair

If you've chosen to have your hair cut and dyed you might be feeling a little apprehensive when the hairdresser's scissors stretch out for the first snippet of hair. It's pretty obvious that any drastic changes, although perhaps exciting or necessary if you plan to flee the country after an embarrassing night in Ziggy's, might put you a little on edge. Even after only having used a salon in York a few times, I've learned that most of the time the stylist with scissors poised often does know about cutting hair and will talk to you about what look you're after before hacking into it.

It's always a safe option to go for the hairstyle you had before, something similar or one that is manageable with a busy student lifestyle consisting of eating, sleeping and working your socks off (obviously that's the three we concentrate on, anyway). But, do not in any circumstance think that a bold hairstyle isn't an option. Although highlights can be annoying to keep root-less and severe edged hairstyles are better cut after being washed, a dry cut can cost just over a tenner!

Blonde Hair

Find inspiration in regular high fashion magazines to the all-rounders yelling "guess what this celebrity's been up to" to the magazine dedicated purely to hundreds of hairstyles. You'll find they all mix in longer and shorter length styles with both spiky straight styles and curly or wavier ones. The general trend on most catwalks is for models to wear their hair up rather than allowing it to over power their outfits. Don't bog your hair down with too many products. Go to get your hair cut at the hairdresser's if you'd rather not let your friend experiment (as much as they say it's going "fine" they may simply be redefining the word). There are lots of salons in town, so pick a hairstyle with room for a natural bounce that also frames your face well.

Then, be brave and let your new fashionable hair take centre stage.
