Dress to Impress this Festive Season

Christmas Prom Dress
Tuesday, 9th December 2008
Presents? Check. Cards? Check. List to Santa? Check. Dress for Christmas ball? Oops. With so many things to think about at this time of year, it’s hardly surprising that none of us have the time or the energy to find the dress we dream of wearing to Christmas parties. Well, fear not, as my guide to selecting the perfect party dress will save you the hassle this Christmas.

There are so many different styles of dresses on the high street that it is easy to be overwhelmed. The temptation is to throw in the towel prematurely during a shopping spree and settle for the ‘safe’ number you noticed out of sheer desperation in the corner of your eye. To avoid this scenario, I have selected two ‘in season’ dress styles to inspire you in your Christmas dress quest.

Metallic

Metallic coloured dresses go hand in hand with the festive season. The basic palates for metallic dresses include gold, silver, bronze and pewter. If you want to score some serious style points go for this season's trends: shiny blue and purple. Jewel colours are strictly one season wonders but they scream fashionista and confidence.

Kate Moss’s TopShop collection has an excellent range of metallic dresses, which are perfect for the party season. Each one is fabulous and individual, ranging from a high neck quick silver dress to an eye-catching metallic blue dress with a pretty detail across the bust. The latter metallic dress from the Kate Moss collection also comes in silver and black now priced at £40. I would strongly urge you to avoid the black however, and go for the metallic; it’s much more festive, honest!

There are a couple of guidelines however when wearing metallic dresses. Avoid wearing too much jewellery - you don't want to look like a Christmas tree has just thrown up on you! Keep accessories simple and understated and let the dress speak for itself. Likewise, avoid heavy makeup. Instead, opt for just a dash of sparkly eye shadow which will set off the shimmer in your metallic dress.

Prom

Prom dresses have to be the most versatile and accessible dress style on the high street. There's a reason why prom dresses are the party girl's favourite. They come in a variety of colours, patterns and have one basic shape: they are usually strapless, fairly short and flare out from the waist.

My advice would be to purchase either a block coloured or checked prom dress for this year’s party season. For the block colour option, pick a vibrant winter colour such as deep purple or a rosy pink to warm those winter chills. Check out Dorothy Perkins's purple mesh prom dress.

Oasis also have a good range of prom dresses with mesh underneath skirts, which are perfect for parties. Again, the colours to watch out for are midnight blue and deep mauve/purple.

Alternatively, if you really want to make an impression at the Christmas ball, go for a stylish checked prom dress. Oasis is the place to be again, as they have a gorgeous purple and gray checked prom dress with a huge bow across the bust. Expect to pay around £70+ however for this type of dress from the not so student friendly Oasis – grrr...

Whichever style of prom dress you decide on, just remember to flatter your best assets by wearing ruffles, bows, sequins, with appropriate detail to draw attention to them.

With my fool-proof guide to Christmas dresses this year, there's nothing left to do but enjoy the Christmas and New year parties ahead - while feeling fabulous in your new festive frock!
