New Year, New Term, New Style

Start this season with a fashionable roar!
Tuesday, 13th January 2009
Each New Year ushers in change; change in diet, change in work ethic, but more importantly change in fashion trends. Sadly, the Christmas break is over but it's time to start focusing on what the New Year has in store for your wardrobe...

Animal Print

I am absolutely ecstatic about the return of animal print for 2009, as it has to be my all time favourite print. If worn well, this print can look both edgy and sophisticated, which in my book is the coolest way to be. With the likes of Christopher Kane, Roberto Cavalli and Louis Vuitton jumping on the animal print band wagon, this is a style that cannot possibly be avoided.

First things first - decide on which type of animal print you prefer. There are plenty of styles available, ranging from snake and zebra print to the favourite leopard print. Hit Dorothy Perkins for Zebra print t-shirts and tunics. But head to Topshop for leopard print cardis, coats and shoes. My main advice would be to stick to one type of print and one item only, as your look should be tasteful not terrifying. Check out thegrey zebra print top on sale for only £14 at Dorothy Perkins. This top actually has a zebra across the front of it - bonus! Wear this with dark jeans and a fitted jacket for extra street cred. Stick to silver jewellery with grey animal print and gold jewellery with brown prints.

Alternatively look no further than the untameable Topshop for stylish leopard print cardis in traditional brown, cool grey and outrageous pink, all priced £30. This may seem steep but with the amount of action this cardi will see in 2009, it is definitely worth it. If you want to ooze more confidence then opt for bright animal print. Roar!

Oriental Print

Oriental prints are set to be huge for 2009 as they have been seen on the spring catwalks of the likes of Basso & Brooke and have already taken residence on the High Street. My advice with this look would be to avoid wearing kimono–style fitted dresses and tops, and instead go for tunic style loose fitting tops and dresses with unusual oriental prints. Orient printed trousers are a definite no-no.

Head to Dorothy Perkins once again as they have a small range of tunic tops in black and gray with pretty orient designs from £18. New Look is also the place to find orient style sheer tops in red and black - very nice.

I have to admit however, that I do not see this print lasting the whole hog of 2009, unlike the versatile animal print. So I would urge you to go for oriental style tops and tunics only as an alternative to animal print and not to go too crazy with them!

Accessory Alert: Pearls!

No jewellery box in 2009 would be complete without at least two sets of long pearl necklaces. Pearls featured prominently on the Luella catwalks and of course remain a staple item in any Chanel collection. They are classic and effortless - so you cannot fail to look marvellous in them. A plain black t-shirt instantly earns style points and is transformed once combined with a string of pearl necklaces.

Before hitting the High Street, rummage through your mum’s or your Grandma’s jewellery box. I can guarantee there will be a gorgeous pearl necklace hiding in there somewhere. The more vintage the pearls appear the more style points for you! Alternatively, head to Miss Selfridge for classic layers of pearl necklaces for around £15. Charms, bows and flower detail on the necklace gives it an instant update and make them even look even prettier.

So there you have it: my little taster of what your wardrobe can look forward to in spring 2009 and what to keep your eyes open for on the High Street.
