(See what we did there? Like the love child of ‘Got milk’ and ‘You’ve been tangoed’)
Laura Reynolds looks at the hype surrounding the collaboration.
Just a week to go until the man in red arrives...
We have started thinking about a couple of the key clothing prints and accessories to keep an eye out for, like pretty pearls. It’s time to shake things up a bit by throwing in some seductive shapes that show off your curves with an air of conservative mystery. Grab your favourite waist belt and recycle any statement heels you picked up last year that shout individuality too.
We enjoyed more muted tones in the Autumn/Winter season of 2008, but I’m just as excited to see the new season's colour palette, bright and bursting with life.
Marc Jacobs, a designer based in New York, has me hooked with a variety of hats you might wear to a luncheon picnic, paired with layered materials nipped in at the waist with a thick belt. The result was a parade of sophisticated ladies shimmying down the catwalk in metallic fabrics, as well as patterned checks and stripes, tartan tops and handbags with tassels swinging to and fro. To pull off this look on the high street, hunt down a unique vintage dress with something a little unusual, or add a bit more character like a darker edge or stitching. Don’t be afraid to mix up patterns, like faint horizontal stripes on a long white dress over a long-sleeved orange checked shirt, as one model did this season.
An ensemble from the Christopher Kane catwalk might only take half the effort if you’ve already nabbed yourself an animal print top to go with dinosaur-influenced bright coats with scalloped edge. Team a jacket or shirt with an extended edge design to alter the silhouette of one part of the body, while keeping the other part, probably your legs, uncluttered and bare.
Ralph Lauren’s collection stood out from the crowd for its sleek take on North African clothing. Think harem trousers, and safari hats or headdresses in sheer fabrics. Dressing from head to open-toed-sandals in white linen and white harem trousers is a bold way to achieve this look, but probably one best for a night out that doesn’t include dinners with staining sauces or leaning against any grubby bars. To pull off these flattering shapes, social grace is also a must, so sitting on the floor in a drunken heap probably isn’t such a great idea. Of course, those of us who take pride in our attire know that fashion is not to be abused. Be prepared to threaten the odd friend who comes too close with a pint...
Whether your look is inspired by the 1950s conservative dress shaken up with an array of bright colours, or you choose bold shape-changing jackets that roar animal instinct, start mixing it up. Aim to create new shapes while accentuating your best assets. Individuality is the word, so be brave and go for it!
