(See what we did there? Like the love child of ‘Got milk’ and ‘You’ve been tangoed’)
Laura Reynolds looks at the hype surrounding the collaboration.
Just a week to go until the man in red arrives...
So, it's time for plan B - we are all very much aware of the wonders that the World Wide Web holds, least of all that we can access up to date news with the aid of outlets such as The Yorker. The Look may be your first port of call when planning a spot of window shopping, but when it is interrupted by, say, a snow storm, you are likely to need to know where to go and where else to look to quench your thirst for fashion.
Sitting online at my desk wanting something more than degree work to fill my day, I thought I’d have a little peek into the worlds of a designer or two, so that I’d get my fashion fix after all.
Well, maybe not into their worlds, but as close as I could get.
Pollini
Browsing through a slideshow of some of the Pollini Spring/Summer ’09 collection on the designer’s website gives a fresh, floaty feeling of something you may choose for the warmer days of the season, though they feel far off. One of my favourite light-coloured pieces was a layered dress with a white collar and a short yellow skirt billowing out from under the top piece. It's a little like a white jacket nipped in at the waist with a thick soft belt at the waist to match the skirt (near the beginning of therunway video).
In contrast to the free floating fabrics used for most of the frilly dresses in the collection, I've fallen for those with a smarter edge, those short yet sophisticated skirts. The extremely small-scale checked material is particularly attractive and lends a glamorous edge to the smart tailored pieces. I am very excited to see grey, white, black and navy being modelled in smooth, clean-cut outfits. Not only have I almost forgotten what grey looks like in anything other than my grey cardigans, but I know it is an especially fun base colour to work with. Almost anything goes and it’s better than black for being lighter.
So, I’ll be adding well-cut sharp shaped grey suit pieces as well as short skirts to my sale/regular fashion shopping list and pin it to my notice board for when the weather’s right to shop in town. It is also worth looking online for high street trends incorporating what was on the catwalk, whether that’s the Topshop site or a search for real vintage pieces on E-bay. A word of warning: not all sizes will be accurate, nor necessarily will the condition of a second hand garment. Don’t let that deter you though, you can find some real bargains online, so long as you are prepared to return the items if you are unhappy with them.
Now, have a little look at some of the designer fashion available online and prepare a plan of what to look for in town… If you get a chance, look up Pilotto’s Spring/Summer ’09 collection for a brighter look towards the Summer, laden with leggings as well as dresses with bold colours that lift you out of the drudgery of Winter, into suave Spring!
