Boyfriend Jeans Vs Denim Shorts
Both these denim staples will earn you major of style points this summer. These denim delights are not for everyone, however, and should be worn in accordance with the style rules of 2009 not 1989. First of all these jeans don’t actually have to be your boyfriend's, in fact it’s probably best if they're not - for both your sakes. As long as they are loose fitting, straight leg, and low on the hips then they are 'boyfriend' style. The idea is also to turn them up at the bottom in order to emphasise the oversized look. Just because it is summer time doesn’t mean you have to avoid jeans like an extended essay; in fact ‘boyfriend jeans’ are probably the best kind for this time of year as they are loose fitting, usually pale in colour and torn. They should look laid back and chic, not '80s heavy metal or '90s grunge.
Check out Miss Selfridge for a small selection of boyfriend jeans for under £40. Team your pair with a tight white t-shirt and Spartan sandals for an instant summer 2009 update. This look may be less flattering on short legged women, as the turn ups will shorten legs even more. But as long as you wear them with feminine accompaniments and accessories you can look dreamy in denim.
If boyfriend jeans don’t turn you on, then go for daring denim shorts instead. Avoid the 'Daisy Duke' look by wearing them with shirts, blouses, and a cardigan if you want to cover your arms to compensate for leg exposure. Check out the vintage shop called Deep on Fossgate for a select range of Levi shorts for around £16 - bargain! These shorts are vintage one-offs, putting you ahead of the fashion pack. Alternatively, New Look has a variety of denim shorts ranging from the torn and tattered to the clean and sharp for less than £20. Wear tight denim shorts with a loose t-shirt to look effortlessly cool.
Waistcoats Vs Jackets
I still have an old denim jacket in my drawer at home which dates from my early teenage years. Simply everyone had one. I knew it would be a good plan to hold on to the thing because now they're back on the fashion circuit along with waistcoats too! Decide whether to invest in a jacket or waistcoat first: doing both is just plain wrong. Denim jackets would be the safe option as they are more versatile and you have less chance of looking like a '90s throwback.
Check out Miss Selfridge for ultra cool light wash denim jackets. Team this jacket over a floral summer dress or with leggings and a baggy t-shirt to get '80s chic. "Never wear denim with denim" has to be one of the key fashion rules. So resist the urge to combine your jacket with your jeans. For those of you with a vintage denim jacket from your youth, why not customize and update it a little. Try rolling up the sleeves, ripping pockets off, or adding a broach/corsage. This way you avoid further dints in your student loan, plus it’s an opportunity to get creative with your clothes!
Thanks to Alexander Wang, denim waistcoats are on-trend for 2009. To avoid the 'builder look', wear denim waistcoats with tight fitting black trousers or go all Boho and wear with a bright tea dress and strappy sandals. Try to find a rustic waistcoat from a charity shop or beg a relative to give up theirs from twenty years ago. If not, Zara, Jane Norman and Topshop are all at your service with a multitude of dashing denim waistcoats. Denim waistcoats are challenging, so avoid them if you think you haven’t got what it takes to take them from the eighties to the noughties.
Don’t despair that all things denim have reappeared on the high street for the first time since you were a teenager. Instead, embrace the variety of denim available and wear it according to your current style!
