(See what we did there? Like the love child of ‘Got milk’ and ‘You’ve been tangoed’)
Laura Reynolds looks at the hype surrounding the collaboration.
Just a week to go until the man in red arrives...
I am all about saving money. Maybe it’s because I have two accountant parents or maybe I am just a 60 year old trapped inside a 21 year olds body. Don't get me wrong, I’m not one of those stingy people who won’t spend a tenner on a friend’s birthday present. A great deal of my money goes on food and drink but very, very rarely on clothing, shoes or anything else for that matter.
Despite what you may be thinking, I love fashion. I worked with the Vogue team over the summer and I spend far too much on magazines. However; I like to know where my money is going and I like to spend it wisely. Yet, for some reason when it comes to my birthday I am a ‘spendaholic’. Nothing is too expensive when it comes to finding the perfect outfit to party in.
It was my 21st birthday last week and for the celebrations I wanted to find an amazing dress to show off in. Unfortunately after parading around nearly every shop in York I could not find a single item that I wanted to buy. Obviously this was an incredibly rare, and hence, stressful situation. Not being able to find an outfit in Topshop of all places finally tipped me over the edge, and upon calling my friends I decided to assess my current wardrobe situation.
Things got worse, but probably not in the way you would expect. I realised that I already have far too many clothes. There were four items in my minuscule wardrobe still with the tags on and some dresses that I simply haven't got round to wearing yet. The dress I finally decided to wear still had the tags in, despite the fact I remember buying it in July. It had cost me £7 in the sale and my mum persuaded me to buy it because it 'made me look like a lady'.
I am sure then that my mother would be thrilled to discover that I teamed it with a push up bra, black waist belt, leather jacket and an unhealthy dose of black eye-liner. I genuinely felt very nice in my newly discovered outfit and this inspired me to delve deeper into the black hole of my wardrobe. I own five black vest tops- they all look the same and they all come from H&M, and a bag of belts. Perhaps most worrying of all is that some of my clothes have been lying dormant for so long that they have actually come back in to fashion.
There is a reason why I am using my desk drawers to store t-shirts and underwear. There is a reason why I can’t shut my wardrobe doors or exit my room without tripping over multiple pairs of boots. There is a reason why I have resolved not to buy any more clothes until the Christmas sales. What scares me most is that I am barely remaining financially solvent and yet I still went to town with the intention of purchasing more. Therefore I have decided to start re-thinking my clothes and appreciating what I already have. By diving to the depths of my drawers and grappling with the hangers in my wardrobe I have been able to find outfits to last me well into next term.
I don't think anyone should pack away their 'summer' clothes during the winter. What is the point? You limit your options and forget about all the things you own… Team a sun dress with a thick winter cardigan, tights, boots and other accessories. Just because you think of them as ‘summer clothes’ does not mean that you can’t be warm in them with a few extra layers. OK, I appreciate that some things like flip-flops can only be worn in the hot weather. Instead consider all those shorts or skirts that you can wear with leggings and knee high boots.
When you are next struggling for an outfit, don't automatically run to the nearest high street store. Have a good look at what you already have and how you can mix and match items to create something new. Play around with accessories, belts, handbags and hairstyles to make a simple black dress look totally different. Be your own stylist and save a few pennies at the same time.
