Ugg Boots: A fashion crime or a timeless trend in the making?
Since their launch in the early 2000s, Ugg boots have become a worldwide success. Even nine years later, the Australian made ‘Uggs’ are continuously worn by fans everywhere, including a large number of celebrities. However, despite such popularity, the debate still continues; are Ugg boots the perfect fashionable trend to follow this winter, or has the look become tacky and perhaps outdated?
In terms of what they look like, of course, this is often a matter of opinion; most people will either love Ugg boots or completely despise them. Personally, I couldn’t live without them; my Ugg boots seem to look great with everything. Although often branded ‘chavvy’ and ‘tacky’, when worn with the right things I can’t see how they can go wrong. They have become a staple part of my daily wardrobe, and it isn’t just because I think they look good.
Ugg boots are made with real sheepskin, which means that your feet will stay warm and comfortable even in the coldest weathers. This is because the boots were not originally intended to be fashionable; they were designed to be worn by Australian surfers whilst out of the water, in order to stay warm. Furthermore, the properties of sheepskin allow air inside the boot to circulate – preventing your feet from smelling! The Ugg boot is a lot more practical and unique than many other boots available today, with excellent durability; three years on, my pair is still in almost perfect condition.
Yet another benefit to this trend is the wide number of styles available. Unlike the usual brown, boring boots found in shops, Ugg boots are available in so many different styles and colours. Aside from the classic boot, there are a range of different styles; some with buttons, some with buckles, even some with pom-poms. Then there is the matter of choosing your colour, with black, pink, and grey being alternatives to the original brown. This all makes it very difficult to choose your Uggs; you are literally spoilt for choice! What’s more, Ugg boots are no longer a trend just for women, with a men’s collection, an adorable children’s range, and even Ugg accessories.
And it isn’t just me who loves Ugg boots. Type ‘celebrities in Ugg boots’ into an Internet search engine and you’ll be confronted with thousands of results! Celebrities everywhere are following this trend, proving even further the success of Uggs. Eva Longoria, Miley Cyrus and Orlando Bloom have all been seen wearing the boots, whilst Madonna, Marcia Cross and Adam Sandler even dress their babies in Uggs!
However, there is one downside to my beautiful boots: they are ridiculously expensive! Whatever style you choose, you won’t get away with spending less than £100. This prompts many people to opt for a fake, cheaper version instead. With many high street stores such as Primark, New Look and River Island offering very similar but considerably cheaper versions of the Ugg boot, this is of course a cost-effective option for those wanting to follow the trend whilst saving money. However, it’s important to consider that these copies are nowhere near as durable as the Ugg boot; many can fall apart when exposed to heavy rain, and without the sheepskin they are definitely not as comfortable.
So, are Ugg boots still a fashion success? In my opinion, yes: this is one trend that isn’t going to disappear anytime soon. And remember, although somewhat expensive, the outstanding quality of the boots will clearly make up for this.
I can't stand Ugg Boots. Where I'm from, you associate them with rich spoilt girls who all compete with each other to show off how much money they have. Personally, I just think they're awful shoes for your feet - whenever I see people walking around with them, their feet aren't set where the sole is, but slip to the side. How is that a good quality shoe?
#1 you make a VERY good point. I've got a lot more shoes that I should admit to having and I have never had the 'slipping off the sole' problem with any of them! I would never buy a pair of Ugg boots purely because they are such poor quality - not to mention how foul they look.
Quite frankly, Ugg boots don't look good on anyone, wearing anything. And they are clearly not good quality...and before anyone says it, no it is NOT only the 'fake Uggs' that have the slipping to the side problem, they all do the same thing sooner or later.
I think I'll just stick with the many pairs of high quality boots and shoes that I own. They keep my feet warm, they don't make my feet smell and I certainly don't have a problem with my feet slipping off the side of the boots, not to mention the fact that I've got at least two pairs that really DO go with anything and actually look good.
Ugg boots... thanks, but no thanks.
