(See what we did there? Like the love child of ‘Got milk’ and ‘You’ve been tangoed’)
Laura Reynolds looks at the hype surrounding the collaboration.
Just a week to go until the man in red arrives...
Although I love all types of film and have a huge amount of respect for the talented actors and actresses my favourite part of the Oscars is the clothes. Fashion is a crucial aspect of the award season, a good dress can go down in the record books as an iconic look for the future, a bad dress can linger around a celebrity for years, constantly being dragged out of the archives as a warning for all.
So what did 2010 have to offer? Well honestly, very little, 2010 will be known as the 'playing it safe' year. Few celebrities dared to be unique and many of those that did chose poorly. The looks were repetitive, clinging to the security of the most recent catwalk trends and reeking of over paid stylists. Many of the gowns stuck to neutral, muted or pastel shades with lots of light blue, grey, pink, beige and white on display. Perhaps the best example of this somewhat lack lustre look is the Twilight and Up in the Air star Anna Kendrick who wore an elegant pink Ellie Saab gown. However the dress made her look ten years older, really what she needed was something young and fresh to throw her into the spotlight.
This year there was also an emphasis on embroidery, many dresses had sequinned bodices and other details which added that extra bit of bling to the proceedings. Some gowns, especially those a little more daring colour really did stand out this year. A huge surprise was the wonderful midnight blue Monique Lhuillier number worn by Kristen Stewart. She looked youthful and sexy whilst maintaining her rocker image (and she finally brushed her hair which is also a massive check in the style column).
Although I recommend checking the whole lot yourself here is my low-down of some of the best, the worst and the just plain weird at this years awards.
First and foremost Sandra Bullock deserves a special mention. Not only did she win the award for best actress but she also wore a stunning metallic Marchesa gown with an incredible embroidered bodice. The look was simple, elegant and totally stunning with a hint of pure 1940's glamour.
Sarah Jessica Parker chose an interesting Chanel couture gown that has had many a fashion critic buzzing. Her look was effortless and seamless with an individual streak that we have all come to love. Her jewellery was perfectly balanced and her dress was impeccably structured, with an amazing jewel encrusted pattern across her chest. The yellow colour of this gown only added to its beauty and this is certainly one look that seemed to stand out amongst all the pale neutral shades.
I severely dislike Miley Cyrus, her aggravatingly fake Disney persona and her annoying blonde alter ego. Yet her dress for this years Oscars can be described in one word. Stunning. The Jenny Packham floor length number fit her body perfectly, had the perfect amount of detail and maintained her youthfulness. The colour made her look more bridal than pop starlet but all is forgiven simply for the cut of the bodice.
Other highlights include Cameron Diaz in Oscar De La Renta, Demi Moore, Dame Helen Mirren and Queen Latifah.
Charlize Theron really stood out as one of the worst dressed of the night. Her lilac Dior Haute couture number was boring and totally unflattering. She looked pale, washed out and uncomfortable on the red carpet. The worst part of all were the two swirls of fabric that covered each breast, more Lady Gaga than sophisticated Hollywood Glamour. One small piece of advice Charlize, sack the stylist!
For most girls there is a simple rule that we all try and follow, boobs or legs, never show both. The reason is that as soon as you get both out its like you cross an invisible line into the realm of cheap and tacky, which is not a good look for anyone. This rule has obviously never occurred to Mariah Carey who showed her ample cleavage and legs in an unflattering blue gown.
Other dresses that are sure to be debated are Vera Farmiga's Marchesa creation that looked like lots of raspberry coloured fans all hastily patched together. Also Nicole Richie's Reem Acra dress was a strange and somewhat out of place choice for the red carpet.
Zoe Saldana, star of Star Trek and Avatar wore what can only be described as an 'unusual' Givency couture number. She dared to be different, opting for a striking lavender, pink and dark purple colours, but the combination of too many ruffles, sequins and a poorly fitting skirt made this outfit one of the weirdest of the night.
Oh, Jennifer Lopez! For me she is one of the most effortlessly beautiful women in the world, but her horrendous bubble wrap dress made me cringe. Ok, so it wasn't actually made of bubble wrap but the folded Armani Prive gown was a disaster. The colour did nothing to enhance her beautiful skin tone and the material bunched around her hip, making her look bigger than she actually is. Better luck next year.
Other weird and wonderful ensembles include the black and pink, high neck frilly dress worn by the lovely Diane Kruger and the chunky Prada creation worn by British newbie Carey Mulligan.
Just like the ladies most men played it safe this year in well fitting black tuxedos with black bow ties. Special mentions must go to Jake Gyllenhaal and Zac Efron simply for looking incredibly polished in their suits. Robert Downey Junior how I adore you! Not to be left out of the latest pastel trend the savvy actor chose a pale blue bow-tie as his accessory of choice. He also wore trainers onto the red carpet complete with thick white soles that made him look more like Doctor Who than Hollywood heart-throb.
So what do you think about the clothes on display at this year's Oscars? Unfortunately I do not have enough space here to write about all of the dresses on display so check them out for yourselves. For me it will always be the pure Hollywood glamour, the classically beautiful creations that will stand out on the red carpet. Fitted bodices, floaty full length skirts and a hint of red lipstick, simple, effective and stunning now and for years to come.
