Good Enough To Eat

Girls, what kind of underwear are you wearing right now? Mismatched cotton bra and pants from M&S? Lacy French knickers in anticipation of the boyfriend’s visit? Your ‘that-time-of-the-month’ pair of faded Granny pants that have holes in them? We all have them, we all wear them, we all have our favourites and the ones we leave right up until lack of clean washing forces us to wear them.

But have you ever worn a corset with suspenders and seamed stockings hidden under a demure dress, walking down the street with red-painted lips feeling like a vintage pin-up girl? There’s something intensely delicious about wearing beautiful underwear under ordinary clothes. Why restrict corsets, garters, stockings, suspenders, slips and petticoats to the bedroom only?

There are two types of taboo that surround these kinds of garments. In the 1960s, women’s liberation movements burned their bras and cast off the restricting buckles and laces that were seen as restricting women, keeping them subservient to men. Nowadays, the modern woman is more likely to be seen wearing jeans than a petticoat, with vintage underwear seen as archaic and anti-feminist. Don’t get me wrong, I love jeans as much as the next girl. They’re both flattering and comfortable, a rare combination.

The other taboo is that of the taint of sluttiness that surrounds this kind of underwear. Cast off by the majority of women in the 1960s, suspenders and corsets were embraced by the porn industry and are now more associated with being a ‘loose woman.’ You only need to glance around a ‘Tarts and Vicars’ party to see this in action.

I challenge you to defy these taboos. I’m not talking about strutting to lectures in your underwear and heels or struggling to breathe in a 50’s style frock whilst making sandwiches for all the boys in your flat. I’m talking about wearing the underwear for yourself. Feeling powerful and secretly naughty as you feel the lace of your stocking underneath your knee-length skirt, rejoicing in the dusky pink of your satin knickers, of a part of you that is hidden just for yourself.

4 rules

1. Quality, not quantity – I’m as big a fan of 2 for £3 Primark knickers as anyone, but for the true contented feeling in lectures or seminars, one or two expensive pieces will feel much better (cheap cotton can itch after a while) and probably last much longer. Satin or even satin-type materials can feel amazing.

2. Keep it secret – It can be quite sexy to flash a peep of the top of a stocking as you cross your legs, but don’t take it too far. There’s nothing mysterious or alluring looking at someone’s black lacy basque through their tight see-through white top. It just screams cheap. Remember that you’re doing it for yourself, not for the titillation of all the males in your lecture.

3. Fasten carefully – With so many zips, laces and buckles, make sure that everything is fastened securely before setting out. Especially stockings and suspenders. Having your stockings fall down whilst getting on the bus is not particularly attractive (unfortunately I speak from experience on this one).

4. Don’t over-use it – Keep your beautiful undergarments as a treat, for a special occasion or for confidence-building, e.g. for a job interview or an audition. With such delicious-looking candy-coloured wisps of lace or satin in your drawer, wearing them every day can be tempting but they will not only wear out faster but can soon become monotonous. Which is exactly what you’re trying to avoid.

So next time you’re having a bad day, step out of your comfort zone and dress your body up so it looks good enough to eat. After all, you deserve it.
