That Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini

Swimwear

Summer is a beautiful time of year. Barbecues in the warm dusk, ice-cold beer pressed to sweating foreheads, lazy days spent in a languorous doze with a book over your face. It is also the one time of year when it becomes acceptable to wear what is basically underwear in front of the general public. Whether you’re lucky enough to be jetting off for some foreign sun or rushing out into the garden every time the sun comes out from behind a cloud in England, chances are you’re going to be wearing a bikini or a swimsuit at some point. And as we all know, it can be a bit of a minefield.

I don’t know about you, but I always struggle with the dynamics of bikini wearing. You wouldn’t open the door to the postman in your bra and knickers would you? Yet you would happily strut past him on the local beach, wearing (when it comes down to it) four triangles of material and some string. Some women even cast aside all pretence of virtue and sunbathe topless, usually the ones that you’d rather not see as nature intended. As a prude Englishwoman I have always refrained from this.

So swimwear is an important aspect of summer fashion. If done right, you can look like the most svelte, toned and buxom girl on the beach. Make a mistake however, and you can end up looking like a flat-chested dumpling with curves in all the wrong places. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your shape in swimwear:

Boyish

If you’re lacking in the chest department, try a plunge bikini with push-up action to create some cleavage. Triangle bikinis look amazing on slim women, and if you think your legs are your best feature, highlight them with tie-up bikini bottoms. If you want a one-piece swimsuit, go for a V-neck swimsuit for that Bond girl effect.

Full-figured

Balcony bra type bikinis balance out your figure, just remember not to team them with bikini shorts or high-cut bottoms as these can make you look top-heavy. One piece swimsuits look great on you and can help to hide things you’d rather hide like a flabby tummy.

Pear-shaped (big hips and slim shoulders)

A halter neck bikini that ties behind your neck show off your slim shoulders and look good with low-waisted bottoms. Avoid anything high-waisted as these don’t flatter heavy hips or thighs.

It’s a fact of life that it is impossible to look elegant on a beach. Sand in inappropriate places, straggly wet hair and large burn patches all combine to embarrass and inconvenience. However, with the right swimwear, at least one of your worries is solved. Happy holidaying!
