(See what we did there? Like the love child of ‘Got milk’ and ‘You’ve been tangoed’)
Laura Reynolds looks at the hype surrounding the collaboration.
Just a week to go until the man in red arrives...
Black ‘n’ Blue - The red carpet itself had very few fashion downers, although that’s not to say the endless trend of black and navy blue didn’t begin to send me to snoozeville after a while. Nonetheless, the hue did boast some highlights; Tina Fey went for lovely silver satin with a black Picasso-inspired overlay, and the shiny silver boosts on Julianna Margulies’ sleek gown livened her up instantly. Lea Michele won the night, positively beaming (it was her birthday!) in a strapless Oscar de la Renta ruffled at the bottom (although, personally I think fewer ruffles would have done her even more favours).
Feeling Gleeful - The Glee crew didn’t just have Lea representing on the red carpet; Jane Lynch hopped out of her trademark tracksuit into a wonderful aubergine one-shoulder that showed us even Coach Sylvester has some super curves to gaze at. Dianna Agron meanwhile left me perennially confused, because on first glance I instinctively liked the lacy-ribbon Carolina Herrera creation, but then upon closer inspection I sort of couldn’t stop comparing it to a doily, or one of those china dolls your grandmother might have by her fireplace. Jury’s still out for me on that one. And though not a favourite everywhere, I was loving Naya Rivera’s ultra-sculpted bottom half, and the show’s creator Ryan Murphy went for a similar teal effect for his tuxedo, giving him the jauntiest male look of the evening.
One-Shoulder Wonder - Another trend this year aside from the predominantly dark dresses was the one-sleeved numbers. The Dexter ladies both opted for this look, with Julie Benz sporting a virginal white design that had the 38-year-old dropping jaws everywhere. Jennifer Carpenter went for the typical darker shade, but put her own spin on it in sparkling figure-hugging elegance.
Mad Women - Worst dressed stars had to go to Christina Hendricks and January Jones of cable show Mad Men. Though the show itself was an Emmy winner that night, its gorgeous gals paled in comparison to their red carpet competition. Christina went for a pleasant lavender tone, but the wispy effect on her sleeves and hem let the whole look down. Similarly, January could have had so much success with her bold royal blue colour choice, but the trailing dress which lengthened at the back looked like it belonged in a circus, and the odd scale-like material didn’t do her many favours either.
Other than the Mad Men ladies, Keri Russell looked more cheap than chic in a garish pink pleated halterneck dress that seemed to be a couple of sizes too big around her chest. True Blood newlywed Anna Paquin didn’t win the critics over either wearing a chunky gladiator-esque gold collar (which allegedly began to fall apart a little as the evening went on!) that – yet again – evolved into a boring black dress.
Curves win the night - I’m not a fan of hers in any sense of the word, but special mention must go to Kim Kardashian who went for the Grecian look with a rounded mosaic collar and long flowing white, a dress which flaunted her figure perfectly. My personal fave of the night? Colombian star Sofia Vergara went for a simple golden dress accentuated with golden sequins scattered down the centre, showing off her stunning bust and eye-catching curves.
Compared to the usual atrocities she puts on her lovely, lovely body, Christina Hendricks' dress was a comparative triumph. January Jones' problem comes with her attempts to look edgy and modern, when she'd be better to accept that she looks amazing in period clothes and just embrace it.
My favourite was Jayma Mays - she's got a pretty good hit rate when it comes to the red carpet.
