What to wear on the beach this summer?
Tuesday, 31st May 2011
Although Yorkshire may seem like the furthest place away from the sun right now, there’s only four weeks left until the summer holidays. For most York students this will mean either a backbreaking 16 weeks of menial summer jobs or a chance to relax and getaway on holiday. Either way, for sunbathing in your back garden or banana boating in the Mediterranean, you’re going to need a bikini or swimsuit.

Going out amongst the general public in an outfit that consists of just four triangles of flimsy material is extremely daunting. A mistimed jump out of the pool, a little too vigorous game of volleyball – all of a sudden you can be bearing your most private parts to the goggle eyed public. If you want swimwear that leaves a bit more to the imagination (and you don’t fancy wearing a burkini a la Nigella) as well as supporting and enhancing your assets, vintage style bikinis and swimsuits are a quirky and easy way to make you stand out on the beach.

One piece swimsuits have generally been out of vogue recently, conjuring up images of your Gran in a stretchy Lycra costume. But giving your body a little bit more of a cover up doesn’t have to mean frumpy or boring. Topshop do a beautiful floral print swimsuit, with padded cups and a halter neck to enhance the bust. At £32.50 it’s a little expensive for the average student budget but with flirty frills and a sneaky peek cut out at the back, it will leave you feeling safe and covered but no less alluring.

If you want to show a little more skin but still keep a vintage style, opt for a halter neck bikini with fuller short briefs. This blue polka dot bikini from La Senza has the option of a matching skirt brief which is a bit different to your usual bikini briefs and provides more coverage. It’s a little pricey but should last you the entire summer, no matter how much snorkelling or volleyball you do.

Choose a bikini with high waisted briefs for an instant vintage look. ASOS.com have a good selection of mix and match bikini bottoms and tops. This pink ruffled bikini top can be matched with high waisted briefs for a relatively inexpensive and retro outfit. High waisted briefs have the added bonus of hiding any dodgy cellulite on thighs and if you’re not confident about your stomach, they hide that too.

Add some oversized sunglasses, a floppy hat and some bright red lipstick to any retro swimwear to look like an instant pin-up. Avoid heels on the beach though; sand can be less than helpful. Wrap a bandana around your hair for vintage style as well as protecting your hair from the sun and damaging salt. Happy holidays!
