Wet, wet, wet

Getting wet is so last year
Tuesday, 9th August 2011
Having spent weeks trawling the high street for the perfect bikini or swimsuit, we are all more than entitled to feel somewhat short-changed at Mother Nature’s damp and disappointing weather offerings. If you’re going abroad, at least you have a glimmer of hope at putting that well thought out and perfectly matched summer wardrobe into practice. If you’re not so lucky, it seems you’re more likely to be needing a raincoat than a sundress this summer, whether you’re working, interning, or simply relaxing, which is why we’ve put together this guide to the High Street’s raincoat offerings.

The first option is this Topshop Pac a Parka , handy for carrying in your bag. The tie waist belt makes it more stylish than your average mac, and the flowery print gives it a feminine twist. It’s quite reasonably priced for Topshop too!

This Dorothy Perkins quilted jacket offers extra warmth, and the lighter colour makes it more suitable for summer evenings. What it has in style and sophistication, it lacks in a hood, making an umbrella (ella-ella-ella) a good idea (see below).

A quirkier design, more suitable for play than work, is Cath Kidston’s star cagoule. Although this is the only one currently available online, other styles and designs are available in Cath Kidston stores. From experience, they are not the most waterproof of waterproofs-light showers are fine, but try braving Britain’s finest weather in one of these and you are liable to get soaked.

If you’re feeling flush and looking to splash a bit more cash, Cult have this Superdry jacket for £54.99, although it hasn’t got a hood.

If weather forecasters are to be believed, we are due to have a washout August, so an umbrella is also advisable. Obviously, standard umbrellas are pretty easy to come by. Alternatively, Cath Kidston’s birdcage umbrellas offer decent coverage and are made from clear plastic, erasing the usual problem of not seeing where you’re going and taking an eye or two out. Alternatively, use this improved vision as a chance to take better aim. Although substantially waterproof, these umbrellas are not built to withstand strong winds, so not advisable for a trip to the seaside.

For a more unusual design, this umbrella comes with a built in coffee cup holder, which is useful for when you just don’t have enough hands

So there it is, our round up of summer raincoats and umbrellas. Depressingly, it seems that winter coats are already hitting the high street, and the autumn weather probably won’t be far behind, so wet as it may be, take advantage of the warm weather while it’s here!
