Handy for campus but town can be a long walk
1. How far is it to campus?: 15-20 minute walk, through Barracks or Allotment and then Walmgate Stray next to the Biology Department. If you live closer to the village, you’ll probably walk in along Broadway or Heslington Lane.
2. How far is it to town?: 15-30 minute walk along the river - very nice, but the river sometimes floods!
3. Is it on a bus route?: The number 7 takes you through town and to the train station.
4. What are the local facilities?: Pharmacy, Barber shop, corner shop. Aldi and Iceland not too far up the road, also Sainsbury’s at Jacksons nearer to town.
5. What is the best takeaway?: Mirchiz Indian restaurant on Fishergate.
6. Rate the average rent.: Varied, £52-70 a week.
7. How 'studenty' is it?: Not quite your Heslington Road, but there are lots of students about.
8. How safe is it?: Police station nearby. Walmgate Stray and Cemetary Road are not well lit, and probably should be avoided late at night. But I haven’t head of any major incidents recently.
9. Ambience of the area?: Lots of terraced housing, with mix of students and locals. The proximity of river is nice, especially if you enjoy a walk into town. Satisfies most sudent needs, but lots of traffic at rush hour!
10. Pub?: The Fulford Arms, but most students tend to frequent The Victoria on nearby Heslington Road, than the locals.
The new student favourite
1. How far is it to campus?: 10-25 minute walk, either up Green Dykes Lane, or through the Science Park via Windmill Lane/Next Generation Club.
2. How far is it to town?: About 15 minutes on average, less if you live on Lawrence Street, and a bit longer for those who live further down near the Archbishop Holgate’s School.
3. Is it on a bus route?: Number 10 takes you into town and to the train station.
4. What are the local facilities?: Next Generation Gym, B&Q, pharmacy, hairdressers, Post Office, pet shop, Shell petrol station. Somerfield is the local supermarket, but the Co-Op is also closeby in Tang Hall. Morrisons is probably best for deals, but a further distance to walk at about 20 minutes.
5. What is the best takeaway?: Depends what you’re looking for! There’s Chubbies for burgers, Chenab for Indian, Pizza Hut Express, or Chinese takeaways on nearby Lawrence Street.
6. Rate the average rent: Approximately £58-72 a week.
'7. How 'studenty' is it?': Quite a lot of students, but not saturated.
8. How safe is it?: The main road is well lit although some of the side streets are not. Tang Hall is probably the most notorious area for crime, but incidents are rare. Like many places, it’s probably best if you’re not walking home alone at night.
9. Ambience of the area?: Very busy, with lots of students about. Handily located for campus, and still not too far away from town.
10. Pub?:The Black Bull – has fantastic meal offers on weekdays and quiz nights.
Saturated with students
1. How far is it to campus?: 10-15 minute walk.
2. How far is it to town?: 10 minute walk.
3. Is it on a bus route?: Our beloved number 4, of course.
4. What are the local facilities?: Greengrocers, Spar is the closest supermarket, but not great for variety.
5. What is the best takeaway?:Efe’s! Fantastic prices and open until the early hours.
6. Rate the average rent.: £55-75 a week Can be quite expensive due to it’s popularity.
7. How 'studenty' is it?: Probably the most students living in one area outside of the university! There will always be someone walking to campus.
8. How safe is it?: Quite safe, but has previously been a target for robberies due to the high student population of the area. Theif Lane and Heslington Lane best avoided at night.
9. Ambience of the area?: Great student feel, not amazing accommodation but you can guarantee a friend only lives a few doors down!
10. Pub?: The Victoria, probably not the greatest food, but has a welcoming feel and is popular with students living in other areas too.
Not very student orientated
1. How far is it to campus?: Campus is about 25 minutes walk or around 10 minutes cycle depending on where you come from. From Millennium Bridge it's straight across to the Barracks and on to Walmgate Stray!
2. How far is it to town?: Around 10 minutes fast walking gets you to Cliffords Tower.
3. Is it on a bus route?: The number 11 takes you into town and the railway station
4. What are the local facilities?: There's Sainsburys at Jacksons,Bargain Booze, a whole row of Charity shops, a gourmet food shop, Meltons restaurant, video shop, and plenty of hairdressers!
5. What is the best takeaway?: Bay of Bengal - BYOB Indian!
6. Rate the average rent.: Around £57 for a 4-bed house.
7. How 'studenty' is it?: Not really, whilst South Bank does have a reasonable amount of students due to the terraced housing, it's a bit more sedate. But Millennium Park is perfect for the summer or for a run!
8. How safe is it?: Good street lighting and safety but the quickest way is across Walmgate Stray which despite many calls is still unlit!
9. Ambience of the area?: Really lovely, bit further out so has a nicer more relaxed feel, is near to the Knavesmire and the Racecourse.
10. Pub?: The Winning Post- but you probably won't find many students there!
Great facilities but far from campus
1. How far is it to campus?: A good 30 minutes walk, and 15 minute peddle!
2. How far is it to town?: Depending on which side of Heworth anything from 10-20 minutes walk.
3. Is it on a bus route?: The Coastliner to Whitby goes past our house! As does the number 11 which goes to the station and up through South Bank.
4. What are the local facilities?: There's a Co-op, Post Office, a pawn shop, health food shop, hairdressers, Boots, Halifax, Spar, 'The Local' (booze shop) and a Chinese takeaway! Morrisons is also not far away.
5. What is the best takeaway?: The Heworth Chinese Takeaway - only a few doors down from our house!
6. Rate the average rent.: Hard to say, our rent is £58 but I'm sure we're at the lower end of the scale!
7. How 'studenty' is it?: Fairly, the areas full of big old houses so there tends to be big groups of us, just not many of them!
8. How safe is it?: Although we've had a car wing-mirror and window broken, and a bike stolen from our backyard, it never feels unsafe!
9. Ambience of the area?: Nice but not very studenty! However, it's good for location if you have firends living in Tang Hall. After viewing several houses for a large group it's definetly better to look a little further.
10. Pub?: The Nag's Head in Heworth village.
The houses along Francis and Ambrose street near the barracks are really good value and perfect for campus or town. Also the best pubs for students in Fulford/barracks area are the Plough and the Wellington (especially the later- £125 for a pint of bitter!)
sorry, £1.25. £125 lol.
Yeah, the Welly on Alma Terrace rocks my socks. A 30 minute walk to town from Fulford is a massive overestimate. At a quick walk I could get from Frances Street to the station in 10-15 minutes.
As for South Bank, don't even mention the Winning Post, the bar is laughable, it's dead and no students. If you're living up the Knavesmire end of South Bank (near the racecourse) then there's an awesome chippy, a couple of good corner shops and a butchers and bakers. It's a little further from town and uni, but if you're cycling, the size and value of the houses makes it worth it.
I must say that the Saddle Inn is the best pub in Fulford. Great food, great atmosphere, great bar staff (me)
South Bank, where I live, has a cracking pub near the Knavesmire - it's called, um, the Knavesmire. Big screen TV, cheap drinks, pool, darts, friendly atmosphere, and it's an enormous place. It's a shame we only discovered it last term. Much better than the piss-poor Winning Post... last time I was in there, I got attacked by a 3-year old child.
I'd definitely recommend South Bank as a good place to live. Cheap rent, close to both ends of town (10 mins to either Wetherspoons!!), plenty of facilities just up the road, Aldi/Iceland are 5 minutes over the bridge. Yeah it is a bit of a distance from campus, but the 25 min walk will do you good, or get a bike!
The only bad thing about the Knavesmire is that it's dead every night apart from a Friday. Aside from that it's a pretty standard "family" pub. I live pretty much next to the Knavesmire and it's a 40 minute walk of shame from campus.
Heworth fish and chip shop kept me fed on a £2 feast of potatoes and batter. Lovely. Plus it's like 10 minutes walk to town, brilliant for nights out. And Nettos the home of cheap cheap food is really close.
