College Christmas Balls: A comparison

Disco Ball
Christmas Balls approach
Saturday, 5th December 2009
December has just rolled around and fortunately, along with the chilly wind and unforgiving rain, it brings with it the promise of Christmas. After 2 months of settling in, studying hard (or hardly studying), it’s finally Christmas time, and it looks like everyone is going to have a Ball!

Langwith’s Christmas Ball will take place on 6th December (Sunday Week 8) at the Churchill Hotel.

  • Price £25

Tickets for this event sold out in two selling shifts - that’s 110 tickets within 4 hours, a fairly impressive feat! It promises an exclusive champagne reception and a three-course gourmet dinner, complete with pudding for dessert! There will also be a photographer at this ball, giving Langwith students their very own paparazzi and a taste of glitz and glamour.

To make sure all the posh doesn’t take over and turn Langwithers into stuffy old crumpets, Langwith students will be heading down to Yates’s for their private after party, where the JCRC Election results will be announced and general student partying will commence.

According to current JCRC Chair Sam Asfahani, this has “proved to be the most popular event of the year” for Langwith, which is known to have “struggled at times with events, while succeeding in welfare and student action”. Sam commended Langwith’s decision to set ticket prices low, running “lower profit margins in order to give best value for money” to Langwith students. Sam concluded by saying, “All in all we think it will be a great way to end the year and say goobye to the 2009 JCRC.”

Halifax College’s Snowball on the other hand, is set to take place on 7th December (Monday Week 9) at The Royal York.

  • Price: £30

This event also seems to have completely sold out, and ticket holders have an extravagant line up in store for them. Halifax students are promised a black-tie evening, and can expect to be wined and dined at one of York’s luxury venues. Halifax is also offering a photographer and prints available on the night itself for those who want to capture their Christmas moments in style.

Live band music will be available as entertainment as well as an after party at Orgasmic! JCRC election results will also be announced at this event.

Also taking place on 7th December (Monday Week 9) is Alcuin College’s Snowball, at the Hilton.

  • Price: £28 for individual
  • £24 each for groups of 8 or more

Alcuin seems to be the only college to employ a marketing strategy to promote their Christmas Ball tickets. Other than the usual 3-course gourmet meal, these tickets will include half a bottle of wine and a cocktail free for each guest, promising to be a very merry Christmas indeed!

There will of course be photographers available at the event to capture everyone’s night and an after party at Orgasmic along with the Halifaxers. According to Alcuin Ents Rep Jeremy Lilley “Everyone is going to have a fab night, and with only a few tickets left, it’s sure to be packed!”

Goodricke’s Christmas Ball will also be happening on 7th December (Monday Week 9) at the Merchant Adventurer’s Hall.

  • Price: £ 33

Setting them aside from the other colleges this year is the medieval theme of their chosen venue, which is nearly 700 years old. Like the rest, the Goodrickers’ evening will start with a drinks reception, but this time with the promise of an open fire and live jazz music. During dinner, Goodrickers will bid farewell to the outgoing JCRC committee, before heading down to the Parish for a private after party.

Although a fair bit more expensive than most of the other college balls, Goodrickers will admittedly be celebrating in true Christmas style, with dinner at a medieval hall and a party at a church!

Vanbrugh’s Winter Ball will be held on 8th December (Tuesday Week 9) at the Royal York Hotel.

  • Price: £25

Similar to the other colleges, a ticket would get you a mulled wine reception, a 3-course meal and half a bottle of wine each. Vanbrugh College will also have their very own photographer with prints available on the night, a private DJ, bar and entertainment until 1 am that night!

Vanburgh Ents Rep Steve Ramsey told the Yorker that in true Christmas spirit, Vanbrugh College is “making no profit from our winter ball” and has even subsidised some of the ticket price to make it “better value for money”. He feels that Vanbrugh College is “offering a lot for the (low) price” and hopes that “it will be a great night for all”.

Derwent’s Christmas Ball will take place on 10th December (Thursday Week 9) at the Hilton.

  • Price: £20

By far the cheapest tickets of all the colleges, Derwenters are in for a Christmas treat, as they will be served a 4-course gourmet dinner and a free drink on entry! Derwenters will also have a private disco and DJ, and 20% discount off drinks all night.

According the Ents Rep Katie, Derwent had their Christmas Ball at the Hilton last year as well and they were given an offer they couldn’t refuse this year. She emphasised that this was “the perfect opportunity to dress up” and “sit down to a delicious, festive meal” and that the tickets are “such a bargain”.

Katie told the Yorker that tickets have been sold to a “good mix of freshers, second and third years so it will be a good chance for Derwent bonding”. She looks forward to the “sharing of college spirit” in light of the fact that Derwent’s new JCRC have just been voted in.

Last but not least, we have James College’s Christmas Ball, which will also take place on 10th December (Thursday Week 9) at the Royal York Hotel.

  • Price: £25

The evening kicks off at 7.30pm with a complementary mulled wine reception. The 4-course dinner has been kept traditional. According to Christmas Ball Coordinator Tom Hobohm, “Think turkey, Christmas pudding…” and there will also be a vegetarian option. James College prides themselves in providing high quality food prepared by the Tempus restaurant chef at such a low cost.

One of the highlights of the evening will be the James College cum RAG Christmas charity raffle. Ents Rep Charlotte Coyle cited “champagne and an Apple iPod” to be among the prizes up for grabs that night. Tom promises that it “really is going to be some of the best out of all the balls.” Entertainment that night features two DJs; one of which their very own ideoteque DJ Simonsays.

Election results will also be announced that night. As tickets have nearly sold out, Vice Chair Will Laurie fully expects “a great atmosphere as the college says goodbye (and possibly good riddance) to the old JCRC and welcome in the new one!”

According to Will, “the great response in the form of tickets sales is testament to the fantastic college spirit that currently exists around James” and he believes the James is offering “much better value for money than some of the other (college) balls”.

Each college seems to have their selling points when it comes to their Balls. Goodricke’s more expensive taste has bought them what promises to be a unique Christmas dinner and Derwent’s truly economical tickets really do seem like incredible value for money! No matter which college you belong to, the Yorker wishes you a Merry Christmas Ball!

Derwent is cheaper but the Hilton is a bit rubbish. Most of the other colleges chose not to have it there because they wanted to enjoy themselves...
