50 years after the publication of 'James and the Giant Peach', the works of Roald Dahl continue to celebrate success.
As the music faded and anticipation rose, the winners for each JCRC position were announced to the over-200 strong crowd of Goodrickers gathered.
With a lot of the positions uncontested, candidates and Goodrickers were mainly relieved to find out RON hadn’t received too many votes for any position, showing strong support for the candidates running.
In one of the more heated competitions in this year’s elections, we saw Nacho Hernando beat out his three competitors to become this year’s International Rep after one round of eliminations. Rahul Verma came in a very close second.
Nacho told the Yorker, “it’s a great feeling to have been supported by so many people but this is also accompanied by a feeling of great responsibility.” He considers Goodrickers’ votes to be a "loan of trust" and promises to do his best to “return that loan with a high rate interest.”
His immediate objective is to get to know everyone on the JCRC. According to Nacho, ”We are now a team, and in order to do a good job we must not be dedicated individuals but a synchronised machine.”
In the final round of results announcements, most of the major positions were contested and the atmosphere was noticeably more intense than the first few rounds. We saw Alex Reid take the position of Vice-Chair Activities and Participation over fellow contestant Oliver Metcalf, and Catriona Brown become the new Vice-Chair Services.
After a night of hearty celebration, Goodricke’s new Vice-Chair, Alex, told the Yorker that he was “absolutely elated” about his win and “grateful for the support that Goodricke has shown me (him).” Alex’s highest priority is to run the by-elections to fill up the still vacant positions on the JCRC, such as RAG Reps, Sponsorship and Merchandise Reps etc. He aims to “start nominations in Week 1 next term and voting in Week 2“ (something to look out for, Goodrickers!).
Alex commended the election turnout, and thinks it shows that Goodrickers “feel involved in the future of the committee”, and that “it’s going to be a great 2010 for Goodricke College!”
The highlight of the night, however, was of course the results for Goodricke College’s JCRC Chair of 09/10. After one round of elimination, we saw Sophie Walker and Tim Ellis left battling it out with votes for the position. In the end, frontrunner from the beginning of this year’s elections, Tim Ellis, proudly took the stand to introduce himself as this year’s Goodricke’s Chair, to loud applause and much cheering.
Tim said that it was “probably the most tense few hours of my (his) life at the results night” but he was “ecstatic to win”. He looks forward to “jumping into the role and hopefully being the Chair that Goodricke deserves.”
According to Tim, the committee this year has a “good mix of second and third years and a large proportion of first years.”
Tim’s first agenda is to get the committee to “know each other as much as possible and make sure everyone knows what is expected of them, and what is expected of him”.
The official handover of the JCRC will take place this Thursday, where the new members of the JCRC will have a chance to learn more about their roles from their predecessors.
Next term, Tim will have his hands full, and all in the name of Goodricke! He will be “sorting out an events timetable, planning the RAG Parade, getting an overhaul of the website sorted and getting the by-elections underway as soon as possible”, which as mentioned earlier, will be organised by Alex Reid.
It certainly looks as if there is going to be a lot to look forward for Goodrickers when they come back from Christmas holidays!
Tim’s message to Goodrickers, "I hope I live up to the expectations of everyone. Goodricke has had a great first term but we still have so much more potential. I hope the new JCRC can provide all the things that students want in the coming year. Goodricke has by far the best college spirit at York and by far the best students and it’s going to be an honour working for you all over the next year!”
