50 years after the publication of 'James and the Giant Peach', the works of Roald Dahl continue to celebrate success.
The new Alcuin JCRC, which at present is incomplete without Merchandise, Equipment, Communications and YUSU Volunteering reps, has nonetheless, according to Todd, “been working very well together this year”.
He may have a point: the Alcuin JCRC does appear to have been particularly productive in the couple of weeks students have been back at York. The Alcuin College website has been relaunched, and they were quick to organise one of the first late-license events on campus, last Friday, and the event is considered by Todd to have been a “huge achievement for our Services team, especially the VC and the Ents”. The focus was on making “a good start to the year” and getting “as many people into the bar as possible”. It worked, with the Ents officers selling around 130 tickets in advance as well as more tickets on the door. The space-age theme proved popular due to its simple criteria and Todd emphasised the “event went well; which is really great seeing as it's the first one our new Ents have run. People definitely seemed like they were enjoying themselves!”
Todd emphasised that he believes Alcuin to have a “very strong” JCRC this year with many “focused” and “capable” officers. The JCRC’s strengh seems to lie in its willingness to cooperate to achieve the best results: Todd told the yorker “the Alcuin site relaunch has been a huge effort, particularly for the IT officers, but it needed involvement from everyone and its success is an indication of how well the committee is working together”.
On his plans for the JCRC this year, Todd revealed an interesting view. While adhering to the expected goals of “aiming to increase the profile and success of all parts of Alcuin college life, from Ents and Welfare to Sport”, Todd suggested that the Alcuin JCRC was “also looking forward to collaborating with other colleges, especially in socials and in terms of protecting student interests on campus”. This JCRC may be one to watch.
Alcuin JCRC by-elections opened last week and hustings are this Friday. There are four position to fill: Merchandise, Equipment, Communications and YUSU Volunteering and results will be announced, no doubt in true Alcuin style, on Friday week 4. Todd admits it “will be great to complete the JCRC” and looks forward to working with the new officers.
