50 years after the publication of 'James and the Giant Peach', the works of Roald Dahl continue to celebrate success.
For those of you who don’t know, RAG stands for ‘Raising and Giving’, and is a non-profit organisation which raises money throughout the year for 10 different deserving charities. All proceeds from Woodstock will go to these beneficiaries, of which include national charities such as the Make a Wish Foundation, local charities like North Yorkshire Aids Action, and even our very own Student Action at York.
Woodstock is York RAG’s main event of the year, and will take place on Vanbrugh Paradise on 23rd June from 12pm. With over 12 hours of live music, Woodstock will be headlined by Make It Better Later, Fenna Rhodes and the True Ingredients, Accept Instruction, and Apply the Breaks.
Many of York’s student societies will also be making appearances with performances from the like of Dance Soc, Samba York, Juggle Soc, York University Gymnastics Club, Jazz and Blues, Doug Soc, Pole Exercise, Comedy Soc, Revelation Rock Gospel Choir and the Zamar Gospel Choir to name but a few!
Woodstock's a great event. It’s probably one of the best on York’s calendar. It helps generate a lot of money for charities and raises the profile of so many bands on campus
Samba York performer Will Harwood told The Yorker: “I’m looking forward to playing in front of hundreds of people. Samba usually goes down well with any crowd, and hopefully this should be no exception. We've been spending the past year building the band back up and trying to raise its profile, and performing at Woodstock should help to raise it even further. We've been practising and gigging a lot and we're hoping to add a horn section for the event, so expect to hear some true 90’s Latin classics!”
Will added: “Woodstock's a great event. It’s probably one of the best on York’s calendar. It helps generate a lot of money for charities and raises the profile of so many bands on campus, and because of the sheer amount of people who attend it means you get to perform in front of a crowd who might not usually get the chance to hear you.”
Will is also performing with his ‘world music’ band Vudu Guru. “We’ve written a couple of extra songs, and we’re stocked up with face paints and glow sticks. Whether the glow sticks will actually have any effect in the middle of the day remains to be seen!”
With outdoor and indoor bars, out door and indoor stages, DJs, drinks promotions, festival food, a barbeque, face-painting, and a raffle, this year’s Woodstock looks as if it is going to be a great way to round off the academic year in style.
This year’s Woodstock is shaping up to be the best to date. Everyone works so hard to make Woodstock one of the best events on campus and it truly is an event not to be missed
RAG President Kyle McInnes told The Yorker: "This year’s Woodstock is shaping up to be the best to date. With performances like fire juggling and magic, to music that will suit everyone’s taste, there is something at Woodstock to suit everyone.”
Kyle added: “Please be generous with your donations and come to Woodstock with the intent to give to RAG as all the money raised is going to charity. Everyone works so hard to make Woodstock one of the best events on campus and it truly is an event not to be missed."
All proceeds go to RAG’s 10 beneficiaries:
Woodstock is on Saturday 23rd June from 12 midday to 12 midnight. The event will financed by a donation of £3 on the door.
