50 years after the publication of 'James and the Giant Peach', the works of Roald Dahl continue to celebrate success.
Kicking it all off was the Toga party at Tru on Sunday Week 5. Unfortunately, as the current largest Toga party number stands at 2166 people, RAG’s Toga party didn’t quite break the record. However, the event was still a success with many people seen partying it out on the Tru dance floor, earning enthusiastic shout outs from the DJ for “the people dressed in Togas!”
The RAG Viking Raid and the Rocky Horror Slags and Drags event at Yates and later at Ziggy’s were also successes. However, arguably the most exciting and spirited night of the week was Thursday night, when the finals for Mr. and Mrs. York took place at the Courtyard. There was impressive college rivalry going on that night, with Goodricke and Halifax emerging the strongest (and loudest) contenders. For the talent round, the audience was delighted by Halifax’s hoedown and even more so with Goodricke’s striptease dance, which ended with both the Mr. and Mrs. topless in front of a roaring crowd. Mrs. James was commended for her bravery at competing without a Mr. and it was speculated that Mrs. Vanbrugh was actually a Mr.!
After a few rounds of eliminations, only Halifax and Goodricke were left standing. Their supporters were on the edge of their seats, with both colleges chanting spirited anthems heartily, each trying to drown the other out. After an intense minute of waiting, Halifax’s Marcus “The Sheriff” McDougall and his “Cowgirl” emerged as Mr. and Mrs. York, raising over 290 pounds, with Goodricke coming in a close second with over 250 pounds.
The next big RAG event of the week was the RAG Parade. It was truly a sight to behold as all colleges dressed up in their respective movie themes and congregated at Parliament Street before setting off on their march across town. Before the parade set off, the public was entertained with a few songs from the choir and lively Samba performances. The parade definitely attracted attention with their colourful ensemble- Alcuin’s Cops and Robbers, Derwent’s Cowboys and Cowgirls, the Halifax Horrors, James’ the Incredibles, Goodricke’s Rambo, Vanbrugh’s Star Wars, Langwith’s Oompa-Loompas and Wentworth’s Sports Underdogs.
Heads turned as this collection of personalities paraded through town, buckets and tins in hand to collect money from the public, all in the name of charity. To top the week off with style, the RAG bash took place at the Courtyard later that night, with the theme “RAG goes to the Movies”.
RAG Week 2010 was a great success and an admirable effort for charity. Their core charities this year are: The Invisible Children, Marie Curie Cancer Care, St. Leonard’s Hospice, the Island N1, International Wateraid and YUSU Volunteering.
