Cardigans: not just for school teachers
Tuesday, 20th May 2008
Time has moved on since the cardigan was associated with grandparents and strange supply teachers (always wearing thick socks and sandals). Today, the cardigan is a staple piece that should be thrown in your bag in case the weather changes its mind…again.

Written by Stephanie Joannou

It’s no surprise that cardigans come in all shapes, sizes and patterns. Well, that’s partly true. There is a wide range of varieties of cardigan to choose from, including the rounded ‘crew’ neck and v-neckline. Some styles are cut to be tighter which go well as dainty finishing pieces to pretty outfits while the baggier sort often better suit edgier, laid-back ensembles (your ex-boyfriend’s old Topman cardigan will suffice).

This colourful Kookai cardigan is perfect for making any outfit look effortlessly glam.

Luckily cardigans have found their way into a vast array of shops, from ASDA and Primark for about £6 to a comfortable £9.99 from H&M, as well as the more expensive high street stores if you feel like splashing out. Long-sleeved block colour cardigans look great and keep your arms cosy on windy days teamed with a patterned t-shirt and jeans, strappy top, skirt and sandals or a pretty summer frock.

Incase you might be thinking that’s all very well, but it doesn’t mean cardigans are fun, you are very much mistaken… I have discovered that cardigans do, in fact, get a lot more interesting! Ranging from preppy cardigans with three-quarter-length sleeves like those in ‘Grease’, to shorter gathered sleeves.

Another summery option is to go for a cardie with a bit of a frill… frilly sleeves, a frilly neck line or ruffles down the centre all add a bit of excitement.

For extra detail, opt for a cardigan with a patterns etched out with gaps. In contrast, dress-length and plunging v-necks are bold styles of cardigan that will stand out if you’re lounging around in Vanbrugh paradise soaking up the sun.

Whatever your choice of cardigan - whether it’s something thrown on top for a punch party or as an outfit in itself, embrace it for its wonderful versatility and affectionately refer to it as your ‘cardie’.

Enjoy.

I think cardigans look better on men than women...
