Dating with a difference-Part 2

Your lucky night?
Wednesday, 20th July 2011
This is the second in a two part series from The Yorker, offering some date ideas outside of the norm. If you’re looking for an unusual but fun date idea, either for a first date, or to spend some time with your long-suffering other half, why not try these ideas?
  • Fun fair-Letting your inner child out is a great way to break the tension on a first date, just make sure your date isn’t faint hearted and doesn’t have a fear of rides. An evening of watching you on rides they’re too scared to go on will neither amuse nor impress.
  • Dance classes-Zumba is the new craze sweeping the nation, but if this doesn't appeal, why not try some thing more original, like salsa dancing. If Along Came Polly taught us one thing, it’s that salsa is sexy. Just make sure to warn your partner to dress appropriately-6 inch killer heels and a mini skirt will only result in a loss of dignity.
  • Drive in films-Not too common in England, it’s the novelty that makes this trip to the cinema more interesting. Seasonal drive in cinemas are becoming more common. Obviously having a car helps for this one. Open air cinemas such as the recent showings in Museum Gardens are also an option, but highly weather dependent.
  • Treasure hunt-Organise a personalised treasure hunt for your date, in a garden or local park. For a romantic touch, hide sentimental items such as photographs for them to find. For a more general date, hide chocolate/sweets etc. An option for those with a lot of time on their hands.
  • Jump on a train to...anywhere. Try the student budget improvisation to the airport scenario seen in so many films, where they get on the first aeroplane regardless of its destination. They make it look so easy, arriving luggage-less and passport-less. Chances are you won’t need a passport for any train leaving York station, but pack a picnic and make a day of it. The spontaneity will make it exciting wherever you end up (although maybe avoid Milton Keynes.)
  • Casino-For a classy night with an underlying air of 007, take them to a casino. A great chance to get dressed up in tuxes and cocktail dresses and have a good night out, although perhaps not a great option for the financially challenged. Just make sure your date isn’t nursing a secret gambling addiction first.

So next time you're in charge of planning a big date, why not impress with something out of the ordinary?
