Relight my fire?

Ashley Cole
Please Cheryl? One more chance?
Wednesday, 9th November 2011
With an ever increasing population on planet Earth, we are more likely to go out and find someone (“the one”, if you are a believer in such ideas) than ever before. Yet it seems that more and more couples are opting to get back together, rather than exploring pastures new.

Cheryl and Ashley Cole have been on and off more times than the Blackpool illuminations, and nobody’s calling off bets on a reconciliation for the Kardashian media circus just yet. Could it be that Cupid’s arrow has morphed into a boomerang? Are they mad? Or is there genuine sense to giving someone a second (third/fourth/delete as appropriate) chance?

Despite these bed-hopping, ring-swapping antics of the celeb world, deciding whether to get back together with an old flame is actually a pretty tough choice. If you’re in a similar quandary, the Lifestyle team is here to give you some food for thought. It’s up to you if you choose a romantic meal for two, or opt for a single microwave lasagne.

The most obvious thing to consider is why you broke up in the first place. If it was a temporary reason that has now been resolved, such as spending too much time apart over the summer break, then that’s fair enough. But if it was something deeper, such as one of you being more mature than the other, or wanting different things, then unless one of you is willing to make a compromise that you weren’t previously, it’s unlikely the relationship will work this time around.

You should also think about why you are considering getting back together. Is it because you genuinely miss the person and want them back? Or is it because you don’t like the single life or the alternatives, and are simply seeking the relationship as a comfort blanket?

A relationship will only work if you both want it, so if one of you is only agreeing to the reconciliation to please the other, or to avoid being single, chances are it won’t work out. Tough lesson, that one.

Unfortunately, reconciliations don’t always work out, despite what the celebrity world might have us believe. Fear not. If all isn’t rosy, make like Chezza and head to the USA. At least once you’ve had a whole nation mocking your accent, the break up won’t seem so painful anymore.
