It seems that the obvious way to go is to play it safe with a satchel or messenger bag, such as those available from Burton. They have bags to suit a range of formalities, from imitation leather to canvas.

Admittedly not the first shop that comes to mind for most men, but New Look have a decent range of menswear these days, including this canvas laptop bag. If you’re going for a more traditional look, or perhaps want a bag that can be used for work as well, a traditional briefcase can’t go wrong. You can get a bag in pretty much any colour you want by going down the sports labels route, perhaps most notably Adidas, who have this airline style bag suitable for cycling to and from campus. Many other sports brands have similar styles.
