The 'man bag'

Man bags
From catwalk to campus
Thursday, 8th September 2011
Until recently, men’s luggage choices were fairly limited to suitably masculine sports bags, rucksacks and briefcases. Then came the advent of the ‘metrosexual’ male and his trusty companion, the ‘man bag’. Although many are still not convinced by the concept of the ‘man bag’ in all circumstances, going to university seems to be one of those situations where it is acceptable for men to carry a bag. However, the right bag is still a big choice (unless of course you want a Joey Tribianni style man bag situation on your hands), which is why your lovely Yorker lifestyle team have composed this list of campus-proof bags.

Pure and Simple

It seems that the obvious way to go is to play it safe with a satchel or messenger bag, such as those available from Burton. They have bags to suit a range of formalities, from imitation leather to canvas.

Admittedly not the first shop that comes to mind for most men, but New Look have a decent range of menswear these days, including this canvas laptop bag. Still not convinced about shopping in what is widely known as a women’s shop? The price might change your mind- it’s only £9! The padded strap makes it more comfortable for carrying heavier books back to the library (or cans back from Costcutter).

The classic briefcase

If you’re going for a more traditional look, or perhaps want a bag that can be used for work as well, a traditional briefcase can’t go wrong. A little pricey, and again perhaps a shop you wouldn’t normally consider, Marks and Spencer have a large range of briefcases for the discerning gentleman, such as this basic leather briefcase.

Sleek and Sporty

You can get a bag in pretty much any colour you want by going down the sports labels route, perhaps most notably Adidas, who have this airline style bag suitable for cycling to and from campus. Many other sports brands have similar styles. Labels, darling If you’re looking to splurge a little more, Superdry have a surprisingly large range of bags for men, in a wide range of colours and styles, including this haversackwhich is available in two different colours.

French Connection step away from the usual greys and blacks with this light brown canvas bag (also available in black). It’s slightly smaller than some of the other options here.

Stand out from the crowd

Feeling a little more brave? This Superman messenger bag holds a stark contrast to the usual monotony found in men's shops.

The ‘man bag’ is here to stay, so don't be afraid of it, embrace it!
