The Great Outdoors

The Love Shack
The Love Shack
Wednesday, 27th June 2007
Having spent this weekend sleeping in a field at Glastonbury Festival my mind, and from there drunken conversation, was inevitably drawn to tent sex and the greater concern of sex in the great out doors.

Spending the day wading around knee deep in mud and soaked through by the rain might not make you feel incredibly sexy, but sex in the great outdoors doesn’t haven’t to be quite as ‘basic’ as all that.

Firstly, pick a warm summer day/evening/night - chattering teeth are not exactly conducive to good sex, and you want to be able to think about what you’re doing instead of how you’re absolutely bloody freezing!

However tents can be extremely warm places once you get all that body heat flying around (picture sex in a sauna and you’re not far off). Preferably go for a tent with ventilation or just unzip the middly bit for air flow. Be mindful not to put on some sort of campsite sex show though.

Secondly, the all-important location. You might want to be a bit careful if you’re planning to have sex in a tent, taking into consideration the limited acoustic protection of the tent, its proximity to other people and the interesting shadows cast on the tent walls if you happen to leave the torch on….

Alfresco sex is generally more comfortable if you take a nice thick blanket (plus you can disguise it as a picnic blanket to nosy friends/parents), but if you’re planning to fully embrace nature, do a quick scan of the ground for any thistles/nettles/ant nests/holes (you get the picture).

Beaches are the ‘romantic’ choice but the sand gets everywhere and it’s not all that pleasant, and tarmac or concrete are just uncomfortable, so a nice grassy spot is probably the best option.

Privacy-wise, it’s entirely personal choice – if you’re willing to take the risk of being discovered by a rambler or you’re just an exhibitionist, you only need venture as far as the local park (I’ve been assured by a friend that it’s possible to have sex in a public park in the middle of the day without being discovered….).

Spare a thought for your outfit as well – you don’t want to have to get fully naked if you’re in public in the middle of the day, think skirts and dresses rather than tight jeans or some sort of leotard….If you want to keep things a little more private, go for a walk in the woods and find a nice secluded clearing, or find a spot behind a big hedge or tree in a field, or even in a golf course bunker (only recommended at night).

Thirdly – accessories! Rather than disguising your rug as a picnic blanket, why not just go on a picnic – champagne, strawberries, chocolate, can all add to your alfresco experience. If you’re going for a night-time experience you might want to take a torch – candles are more romantic but not the most sensible thing to light in the middle of a field when you’ll be rolling around…

And finally…sex outdoors is illegal in some countries such as Singapore and although it’s still legal in the UK you might want to be a little bit careful – last year a woman in Newcastle was served an eviction warning following night time outdoor escapades!
