Tie me up, tie me down

bondage
Wednesday, 14th November 2007
I was in Ann Summers the other day and noticed the man queuing up for the till was (rather nervously) clutching something involving strips of leather and metal studs. I couldn’t work out if I was slightly put off or slightly intrigued by this. The whole leather/whips/chains/gimp-costume scene isn’t really my cup of tea, although I can appreciate its excitement, but it got me thinking about the different varieties of BDSM (that’s Bondage & Discipline (B&D), Domination & Submission (D&S) and Sadism & Masochism (or sadomasochism) (S&M)).

Sexual practises involving pleasure through pain or humiliation are hugely popular and most people are willing to give it a try, even if they don’t want to don a Pulp Fiction-style gimp suit and chain themselves up.

If you find the idea of all of this absolutely terrifying, bondage can be reduced to a very basic, sensual act. When your partner is lying on the bed, use something soft and unthreatening like a silk scarf or tie, and either tie just their wrists or both their wrists and ankles to the bed. This can be done simply with their hands above their head and their legs together, or alternatively in a spreadeagled position.

You can add another level of excitement by blindfolding your partner. If the person who is restrained is nervous, tie them in such a way they can escape easily if they become distressed. The idea of domination/submission is very attractive to a lot of people, and the key is to finding a level you are both happy with.

As you become more confident with the idea of restraints they can be introduced into role-playing and the positions and equipment can become more adventurous, the latter including the infamous gimp suit, strait-jackets, and even mummification by clingfilm. Just make sure that if you’ve built some kind of elaborate set-up you take it down before your flatmates/parents/landlord sees, otherwise you could end trying to explain yourself out of a slightly awkward situation…!

Researching this topic led me to the discovery of the practice of "Self Bondage", which apparently involves tying oneself up either for fun or for sexual pleasure. I found this a little odd as a sexual practice, but it is apparently widely popular, with websites dedicated to hints, tips and suggested scenarios.

Quote The most popular form of self-bondage is auto-erotic asphyxia, which is the practice of partial self-strangluation in order to reach a sexual high. Quote

The most popular form of self-bondage is auto-erotic asphyxia, which is the practice of partial self-strangluation in order to reach a sexual high. Although I’m all for a little light strangulation (emphasis on little and light), as an act of self-bondage it is obviously more high risk than regular bondage as if anything goes wrong there is no-one around to help. Self-bondage divides into two categories, "strict" and "sensual".

In sensual self-bondage, escape from restraints is simple and available immediately, if desired - for example, the keys might be within reach or the knots loosely tied. Strict self-bondage requires that the means of escape is unavailable for a period of time and the person must remain in bondage until the release mechanism is activated. I wouldn’t advise this one if you live alone unless you are on very good terms with the milkman!
