Aural Sex

Musical Condom
Musical Condom
Wednesday, 5th December 2007
I was musing on potential topics for this week's column as I turned on my iTunes to decide what to have on in the background while I checked my email. And then I hit on it.. what soundtrack would I choose during sex?

Personally, music is a huge part of my life, and so I give it a consistently large amount of consideration. I first thought that maybe it was just a personal thing, but after a conversation punctuated with many a laugh, and maybe a joke about H.I.M. in there somewhere, my housemate and I came to the conclusion that, perhaps in a similar way to music enhancing films, music makes sex a million times better.

So how is this so? From my own experience, in the dim and distant past I've had sex to what I can only describe as (and vaguely recollect as) a mix tape and then even when the Lion King came on, it was still good! Why?!

A first port of call on this quest for the perfect aural stimulus would seem to me to be porn, simply because porn invariably comes with soundtracks. On thinking though, I'm unsure as to whether the kind of idealised romantic slush (think 'porn sax') or hard hitting disco trance (maybe Europeans enjoy that?!) that the porn soundtrack gives us would prove a particular turn on.

Similary chosing a song which either has sex noises in the background or sounds like some sort sexual instruction manual probably won't do the mood any favours either, unless you love that. I'd probably either laugh or cry.

So this brings me to BAD sex music. I think back to a time when maybe I've selected an album on iTunes (I assure you I don't work for Apple) and its gone on to the next thing which has happily killed the mood. Something like the Les Miserables soundtrack or say where Eminem is shouting about his ex-wife. So I dealt with it at the time, thought about it, learned from the experience and made a playlist!

Obviously it depends on personal taste but something towards the more chilled-out end of the spectrum seems to me to work best, ideally with still some sense of rhythm (obvious why, really), and some sense of passion. A lot to ask I know, but obviously we're talking about the perfect song here. I wanted to say something like Paolo Nutini, but while he writes some great songs, they're often too far on the mellow side of mellow. Be careful, you don't want to make your girlfriend/emotionally in-touch boyfriend cry.

After a bit of thinking I've landed on 'Insatiable' by Darren Hayes as quite a good example. Yes, it is damn cheesy (the sex noises that Darren insists upon making aren't ideal), but it's a pretty sexy song, especially when it hits the key change to knock things up a gear. Also, think Lene Marlin's album 'Another Day'. Relaxing, yet animated, with a bit of attitude in there.

Music is very evocative in that it heightens the senses, so think appropriately to what senses you want to heighten, not just what music you enjoy listening to. You may like a bit of Drum and Bass but take in to consideration whether your partner has the physical stamina to go at 250 miles per hour.

A case in point from my own experience: I love kicking back to some classical music but I find it feels incredibly out of place when it comes to... 'it'. Somehow the nature of 'art music' doesn't fit and makes me feel sort of like I'm in some tastefully done part of a costume drama.

To sum up my findings the the word 'heighten' works nicely. The conclusion I've come to is that music helps to carry the experience that you want to have – heighten it – and excite your senses yet further.

I think Metallica's St. Anger has some great tracks for doing it. Great for those you like it hard and long.

Agreed re: Norah Jones, and incidentally RAtM. I wouldn't want anyone 'raging' against my machine, that's for sure.

I'm not necessarily condoning Darren Hayes, it was just [at the time] a good example of the points I was suggesting in the article!
Error on my part perhaps.
