Football

So the Premiership and other club competitions have ended and they'll be no more footy until August. Ok, so there's the odd Euro qualifier to look forward to (or avoid like the plague if you're sick of heartbreaks and frustrations), but apart from that it's a real dry spell for football fans nationwide. Worry not, here's a selection of online football and other assorted sports games to keep you amused until the start of the new season.

Some of these games will require you to have the Adobe Flash Player installed. If you haven't already got it (the best way to find out is just to try the games first), click on the link and then click on GET ADOBE FLASH PLAYER. Other may need the Shockwave plug-in. Simply click the link to be taken to the download page.

So they call it soccer, there's only four players per team and they can't get the player names right. However this is one of the few half-decent 3D football games on the web and worth a few minutes of your time (or more if you want to have a go at the world championship).

If you want to test out your football knowledge with no strings attached, this quiz will let you try as many randomly selected question as you like and keep track of your score. If you want the chance to win prizes and get sent adverts you don't want, you could always try 'the ultimate football quiz'.

Hardly realistic either as far as either table top or real football goes, this game is nonetheless a great source of entertainment. You can test your skills against a friend or the computer and marvel/complain at the incredible amount of curl the 'players' are able to apply to the ball. Only when you can score using your keeper have you truly mastered this game.

"Oh I say, sensational!" This amusing game is as simple as they come yet challenging and addictive. The old fashioned commentator, black and white 'old TV' look and French defenders holding baguettes are funny too. For at least a minute or so anyway."What on earth was he thinking?"

And now for something completely different. This street racing game boasts great 3D graphics for an online game and dodging through traffic with the faster cars (which you unlock by defeating them) is challenging and fun. One for the thrill-seekers. Just don't try this on the roads.

A rather difficult game, but as addictive as any other pong-a-like. The satisfaction of hitting a swinging shot and seeing it just hit the table before going past your opponent's paddle is as great as anything else I've found in flash games. Whether that's significant in any way is for you to decide.

"Show jumping, that's not a sport!" I hear you scream (unless you're a fan perhaps). No matter, I found it in the sports games section and it's a surprisingly challenging, good looking and accomplished game. One for the soft-hearted and animal lovers.

Summer is rubbish for football, but great for cricket. Practice your batting (and bowling if playing in two player mode) skills with this highly rated game. Just click on 'All Start Slog' to start playing quickly, or have a go at full tournament by clicking on 'Super 8'. Lots of other options are available, just have a look around. If you're wondering why it's called stick cricket, check out the original game.

Perhaps not on a par with Stick Cricket as far as online sports go, and a million miles away from the likes of Pro Evolution Soccer 6 or FIFA 07 on games consoles, Stick Football is nonetheless a worthy diversion. The presence of 11 players on the pitch, squad selection, real player names as well as a large number of international and club teams to choose from - and the fact Newcastle is ranked as the 5th best club in England - make this game stand out from other similar offerings.

Enjoy! I'm going back to Pro Evo 6.
